Book Description

May 7, 2001 Breakthroughs in Application Development (Book 4)
This is an intermediate-level guide to building WAP applications. The Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) provides the technological framework for combining mobile communications with Internet technologies. WAP opens up the Web to a vastly expanded audience, allowing new types of applications to take advantage of user location, provide time-critical information, and offer personalized content. This book details the WAP Forum, mobile devices, and what makes a good WAP application. Using real world examples, this book examines the WAP standards, focusing on those essential to building working WAP applications. It outlines the critical success factors in designing WAP applications and helps the reader select the right architecture for his or her WAP project. Complete tutorials on WML (the HTML of wireless web), WMLScript, and Push technology are combined with the many examples to make Practical Wap ideal for software developers, architects, and managers.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Patrons have no doubt been asking questions about wireless application protocol (WAP)Dthe technologies that make palm pilots, cell phones, instant messaging, and voice synthesis possible. WAP is the emerging transport mechanism for computing and communication, and the answers to several of those queries can be found here. With a good mixture of theory and practice, Bennett, a veteran software developer, covers the whole range of WAP technologies, emphasizing authoring applications. Recommended for larger public and university libraries that support computer science programs.

'Practical WAP is the first book you should but on the Wireless Application Protocol. Bennett has provided an excellent and current guidebook to the complex and shifting landscape of WAP standards. It is concise. timely and Pragmatic.' K. Scott Morrison, Infowave Software Inc.

'Good resource book. Everything you need to get set up and writing WAP apps.' Edward O'Leary Director, Network Strategy, Rogers Wireless

'... the book as a whole is most relevant to designers, system architects and others of a more technical bent getting into WAP. This audience should find the book both useful and enlightening.' Steve Goodwin, Computing and Control Engineering Journal

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for self-learning, September 26, 2001
This review is from: Practical WAP: Developing Applications for the Wireless Web (Breakthroughs in Application Development) (Paperback)
In my 5 years of information technology experience, both in the private sector and within academia, I have not read a better contextualized presentation of technical material than this book. Chapters 1 through 4 provide an excellent overview of important topics and set the context for the more technical information to follow. The WML language chapters (5,6) and the WMLScript chapter are perhaps the best synthesized language reference chapters I have read in a book not singularly devoted to the teaching of a particular programming language.

The practical nature of the book is a refreshing approach to technical writing. The sections on design, architectural and testing considerations are straightforward and usable by both a detailed-oriented audience (e.g. those who implement) and to a higher-level audience (e.g. solution specialists and those who manage). Additionally, the application development case study suits is very clear and well organized and builds very well upon the chapters that preceded it. I highly recommend this book for those who are either implementing WAP-enabled services or who wish to upgrade their knowledge on the WAP front.

5.0 out of 5 stars WAP World, September 28, 2001
This review is from: Practical WAP: Developing Applications for the Wireless Web (Breakthroughs in Application Development) (Paperback)
Practical WAP lives up to its title. The author writes in a lively style that makes it easy to understand the many aspects of WAP. Before dipping into the technical aspects of the different WAP standards, the book sets the stage with an Applications chapter that address what makes a good WAP applciation and a Tools chapter that gives the reader numerous pointers to how to begin developing for WAP.
At the core of the book is a practical discussion of how to use WML (the Wireless Markup Language)and WMLScript. There is a very useful step by step tutorial that takes you through the construction of a working WAP application.
The last section of the book provides useful information on design and architectural issues that impact WAP deployment. There is an important section on interfaces as well as a discussion of how WAP can be integrated with Java Enterprise servers. I expect that as wireless becomes more and more a part of the total enterprise picture, the integration of WAP with server tools will become even more important.
Overall, this well-written book is a must for anyone looking to work in the area of WAP development.
