Editorial Reviews

In Practical Magic, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are sisters hexed by a centuries-old curse…and coping with a possible love match (Aidan Quinn) for one, a zombie (Goran Visnjic) for the other and a need to resume the age-old witchcraft taught by two doting aunts (Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest). Meanwhile, three more modern-day witches (Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer) yearn for Mr. Right in a New England town. Is the arrival of wealthy, irresistible Daryl van Horne (Jack Nicholson) a coincidence – or their unconscious sorcery at work? From John Updike’s bestseller, The Witches of Eastwick is a star-bright otherworldly delight.

It was nice to get two movies in blu-ray.

Practical Magic is one of my favorite movies and we watch it every October to start the Halloween mood.
Stephen P. Frakes
This is a terrible conversion with no picture quality enhancement from the DVD.

I owned both movies on DVD. So the chance to upgrade in quality, plus cut down on shelf space was too good an opportunity to miss out on.

The Witches of Eastwick is an excellent film and looks better than the DVD version (not really difficult to be honest). Given that this, and PM are both based in small towns, with plenty of greenery and water around, Blu-Ray should, in theory, really bring out the colours. I can't really complain too much about Witches, given that the film was made in 1987. Having said that, the Warner releases (double features) of the first 4 Dirty Harry films look AMAZING, and these were made before Witches.

But i have a problem with Practical Magic. This film, if at all possible, looks WORSE on Blu-Ray than on regular DVD. What the hell have Warners done??!! At best, it's an exact copy over from DVD to HD. But it's evident that no cleaning up whatsoever was done.

In my opinion, if studios are going to release older titles on HD format, then they should at least have the courtesy to put the effort in. Blu-Ray discs are certainly not cheap. And whilst i'm delighted to have a better copy of Eastwick, being saddled with a poor copy of PM doesn't make me an entirely satisfied customer.

The 3 stars don't reflect the movies themselves, but if i could give individual stars for quality, it would be 3.5 for Eastwick and 0.5 for Magic.

Love Witches of Eastwick and have never seen Practical Magic but the quality of the transfer is crap. This is not Blu-Ray quality. It is barely a step above DVD quality and that is stretching it. Very disappointed. Have not decided if I will return it. At least it's presented in true widescreen. Be wary of buying a disc with two movies on it. They obviously have to sacrifice quality to fit two movies on one disc. This item was inexpensive but still not worth it.

I LOVE practical magic but this blu ray transfer is crappy! It's also a little jumpy. Warner bros should try again but seperate them into 2 discs!

I love this movie. My review is of the BLURAY poor quality not the movie itself.

Stick with the DVD on the Practical Magic movie if you already own it. If not buy the streaming version instead! I will explain... This is not only a poor quality transfer to Bluray, it is a chopped up version of the full image of the movie!!!

This is not true widescreen. They just slapped black bars on the top and bottom. I watched the Vudu Digital Streaming version and you can clearly see it is the original version without the black bars and chopped up images. This Bluray has actors heads cut off at the tops and images cut off at the bottom.

(SEE THE PHOTOS I ADDED ON THE BLURAY LISTING FOR PRACTICAL MAGIC/WITCHES OF EASTWICK. PHOTOS TAKEN FROM MY TV OF BOTH VUDU STREAMING VERSION & BLURAY DVD VERSION. They are a little slanted from not having an exact camera angle but you can clearly see the Bluray DVD version is of inferior quality & image!!!)

In scene 3, on the Bluray version you can see in the meal they are eating outside at the picnic table. (SEE PHOTOS showing this AT THE TOP OF THE BLURAY LISTING HERE) One of the aunts hat is cut off, and the other aunt you cannot see her dinner plate with the turkey leg. In the Vudu version you can clearly see the full hat and the dinner plate with the turkey leg. Also in the same scene both of the children's heads are cut off at the top.

In the next scene with the two girls sitting in the stairwell the red head's legs are cut off as well as the top of her head.
This goes on and on through the whole movie in the Bluray and DVD versions!!!!

At first watching of the Bluray, I felt something was not right with the head cut off at the top.

The blu-ray of witches of eastwick bundled with practical magic was cheaper than the dvd of either of them separately at time of purchase, to anyone who hasn't seen these movies, they are both great in different ways, get them!

I gave this one a 5 star rating because it is 2 classic movies in 1 and for the price I couldn't pass it up. I would recommend this to add to anybody who likes funny classic movies.

EVERYONE SHOULD EXPERIENCE THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK.It's everything a movie should be. Actually much more, full of over-the-top actors, acting, Nicholson production, Sarandon, direction,Michel Feiffer, writing, and... h'm I'm having a devil of a time remembering other contributors... surprises, laughs, lessons. Over the years I've seen TWOE at least five times. Always something new to see and laugh, marvel at... but funny, I keep forgetting so much; I just know it was GREAT.

PRACTICAL, MAGIC is less awing and more complex, with a plot that carries you through if you concentrate, but just a bit is okay. It's memorable, editing, often funny with shocking sidebars and on occasion challenging to figure out what's what. The famous witches are supported by a bright cast, then newcomers, now more established, I'll have to think for a spell, I keep losing track of whiuch witch is wicked and which is winsome/wholesome. Ah yes, Bullock's winsome while the redhead is abit wicked and wild.Good match, they make the movie less fantasy and more edgy than you'd expect from a comedy, but of a different sort. `
