Book Description

March 27, 2008
In Practically Shameless, Shadow Work facilitator Alyce Barry uses her personal story of awakening from depression to explain the human shadow and its transformation, including a riveting first-person account of Shadow Work processes. She reveals for the first time the pivotal role played by our resistance to change, the hidden player that seeks to protect us. When honored for its loving guardianship, this inner resister becomes our wisest ally and archetypal source of support.

Read by the author, who offers the reader an opportunity to receive this honoring directly and so to move toward lasting change. Shadow Work founder Cliff Barry reads his Foreword.

An Appendix on the Shadow Work Model details the emotional wound underlying each of the 16 varieties of shadow and the coping strategy that each of these shadows represents.

Includes a booklet containing illustrations from the paperback edition by Cindy Kalman, formerly of the McNeil-Lehrer News Hour, and a complete list of CD tracks.

For an audio excerpt, study guides, a synopsis and text excerpts from the paperback edition, other Shadow Work products, and more, visit the Practically Shameless Press website.

Also in paperback.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Practically Shameless: How Shadow Work Helped Me Find My Voice, My Path, and My Inner Gold is the unabridged audiobook rendition of author and Shadow Work facilitator Alyce Barry's self-help guide to revitalizing one's life. Barry draws upon her personal story of overcoming depression to explain the human shadow, and the transformative power of the Shadow Work processes. Shadow Work founder Cliff Barry provides a foreword to this helpful guide to positive metamorphosis, which delves into why humans resist change so much and how to tap into one's positive inner sources. Especially recommended for anyone interested in discovering the mental and emotional benefits of shadow work. 5 CDs, 5 hours 32 min. --Midwest Book Review

A compelling personal journey through courageous self-discovery and growth that was hard to put down. Alyce travels through her life, revealing her growing inner struggles to escape from her 'box.' She hides nothing. Someone has finally written a book on the pervasive shame that shrouds everyday lives in America. --Mary Walilko, small business owner

This work, this book touches my soul. I can envision a new world of people safe in their own skins connecting and working together. --Deryl Adderson, MD

More About the Author

I'm an author and blogger, a certified Shadow Work facilitator, and a public speaker.

I first encountered Shadow Work(r) in 1995 while doing research for its website, a story I tell in my book, "Practically Shameless," now in its third printing and available on audio CD. "Practically Shameless" was on Amazon.com's Bestseller list of books about Jungian psychology for more than 60 weeks following its publication in February 2008.

I am also the author/producer of the audio CD "Home for the Holidays, Tips for a Practically Shameless Holiday Season," offering helpful perspectives on "family stuff" at the holidays, and the co-author/co-producer of the Clean Talk CD, communication tools for group leaders, available from ShadowWork.com.

I enjoy speaking about Shadow Work to large and small groups that have included the Stoll Foundation, the Central Indiana Friends of Jung, Gaia's Doorstep, the International Coach Federation and the Master Facilitator Journal.

I have also published book reviews, essays, and short stories. In the 1980s, I edited several collections of essays by novelist Djuna Barnes while working for a small press whose owner, Douglas Messerli, is an expert on Barnes.

I write commentaries for the Shadow Work email newsletter, of which I am the editor. I have two blogs, links to which are available at my home website, www.AlyceBarry.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deeply touching, hope-inspiring and bittersweet, January 15, 2008
A beautiful and touching read and a profound reminder of how powerful ShadowWork can be. Bittersweet as I recognised so much of myself (and my struggles)in Alyce and her life experience, it gave me renewed hope that some old, ingrained and painful patterns CAN shift and heal.
Easy to read, follow and understand - no techno mumbo-jumbo, no promises of instant miracles but a personal testament of how she transformed her life with dedication, perseverence, the right tools and support - and a reminder that it is possible for the rest of us.

4.0 out of 5 stars Practically Shameless, January 15, 2008
Practically Shameless is written by a woman who has experienced great help and healing through a type of "coaching" called Shadow Work. The honesty with which she shares her personal experiences took incredible courage. By taking me with her on that journey, through reading her book, I have begun to understand Shadow Work and a different way of dealing with past issues and injuries which has given me new hope; validated my own experiences and struggles; and also provided wonderful common ground to discuss things that were stirred up as I discussed this book and the information I learned about Shadow Work with friends who also find the book helpful. Most of all, we have found not just common ground, but hope
for progress.
My life is being changed by Shadow Work. Alyce's book is a wonderful introduction to her experience with Shadow Work, and offers a way to show,
not just tell, how people can find hope for healing in all of this.
