Note that this review is for the latest 2012 edition, while any review written earlier than this year is for an earlier edition, although it's not clear how much has changed. But, there is definitely one feature which was overlooked (if it existed) by at least one earlier reviewer.

I purchased this because I am interested in learning French well enough to gain valuable points towards being "selected" by the Quebec government for immigration from the US. I also travel to Paris every few years. Background - I took one semester of high school French 20 years ago, before switching to a different language. In the mid-2000s, I attended a two-year graduate program at an English language university in Montreal, where I was immersed in an everyday French environment (signs, most shop-keepers, etc.) although my studies were in English and for the most part everyone I encountered could speak some English. During the two years I lived in Montreal, I made three separate trips to Paris, and noted that I felt very comfortable there (in contrast to the "out of my element" feeling I felt on earlier Paris trips.) Still, my speaking and oral comprehension of French was and is very limited - including basic niceties, ordering in a restaurant in fractured French, etc.. Nevertheless, because of these experiences I do have some familiarity with French. Yet, while I can make out the general meaning of something basic I read, I could not compose many grammatically correct sentences in French, even if I knew the basic vocabulary.

Some earlier reviewers have mentioned that this grammar book is not really suitable for the complete and utter beginner, and I agree.

I needed a grammar supplement for my independent study student because modern textbooks are a bit phrenetic in their attempt to integrate culture and imitate real-life language acquisition. Most textbooks simply do not offer enough plain drills to give students the repetition they need to master the basic grammar of French. This book is simple, clear, and thorough. My student is learning the structure of the language. Hooray!

The order of the topics is very different from traditional text books, covering the formation and use of verb tenses and moods before nouns, pronouns, etc. This means I finally get to practice points that I barely had touched on in the courses I was able to complete. Of course, this only works if one has a knowledge of the basic principles of the language, but the abundance of exercises provides just the sort of instruction I need.

I absolutely love this book. If you are a complete beginner, you might want to learn at least a little French before starting this book. This really helps you with pronunciation as well because it has an online audio answer key. I highly recommend this book if you know at least a little French and are looking to advance in the language.

I am sure that the French Grammars prepared by the american publishers and authors are very systematic and concise. Let me thank the author Prof. Annie Heminway for this book. Still in this edition I have noticed several mistakes somewhat like misprints. E.g. the book gives the correct answer on page 294 to the task 2 (se tromper) in exercise ex.13-5 (mettre les prepositions...au subjonctif): "vous tromper". BUT the correct is - "vous trompiez". The next - the correct answer given by the book on page 295 to the exercise 13-6 on pages 111-112 "qu'il lit le journal", where as the correct answer is "...qu'il lise le journal (subjonctif)".
This Grammar book is absolutely useful and I will procede with my studies but the mistakes given above are embarrassing.
The Internet audio excercises are very helpful, but the disappointing fact is that the text is not read by the native speakers of the French Language. The native elocutionists could be more encouraging.

A really comprehensive and practical aid to improving your french. Wish I would have bought it before now. I needed the verb tense help and this does the trick.

I've been using this book for studying on my own and found it easy to follow. The audio answer key is a great idea but the normal rate of spoken French is still difficult for me to understand. I keep plodding on and completing the written exercises so the book is good enough to keep me from abandoning hope of learning French. I recommend listening to French audiobooks, too.
