5.0 out of 5 stars Passed my PE, used this book
The questions in this guide are not like what you will see on the exam....this book is much more challenging. I think their goal was to cause you to be overprepared....which is hard for the PE. I strongly recommend this guide, do the practice problems, all of them. ALL OF THEM!! If you know this material, you'll make it through the breadth section of the exam just...

This review is from: Practice Problems for the Civil Engineering PE Exam: A Companion to the Civil Engineering Reference Manual (Paperback)
The practice problems coordinate with the Lindeburg reference manual. So there is a lot of stuff in this book that is not tested material on the PE Exam. I also found that the construction area was severly lacking in content. Be careful when using this reference as some of the approaches to answering questions(specifically scheduling and geotech/earthwork) are excessively long and roundabout or just outright wrong. The suggested solutions are not always the quickest way to answer a problem leaving a lot of room for error. Just compare this to the NCEES (they write the PE exams after all) practice exam as well as the Peurifoy, Oberlender, and Hinze text books, and you will find that the Lindeberg contrasts to what is taught in these (which is what you should follow as they are referenced in the practice exam).

If you are contemplating using this book as your main study guide, don't. If you are using this to supplement the NCEES practice exam and the Six Minute Solutions workbooks, you will also find this lacking. Bottom line, this is an okay reference, but should not be on your list of essentials for studying for the exam.

2.0 out of 5 stars Problems much harder than on exam, April 30, 2009
By
This review is from: Practice Problems for the Civil Engineering PE Exam: A Companion to the Civil Engineering Reference Manual (Paperback)
Tried to use this to study for the PE Exam, but found that the problems are significantly harder than those on the exam. If you can complete these problems, you will have no problem on the exam; but if you can't, don't get discouraged because these problems are so much harder than those on the exam. I ended up not using this book for practice because I was getting so discourage when I was trying the problems.

I strongly recommend this guide, do the practice problems, all of them. ALL OF THEM!! If you know this material, you'll make it through the breadth section of the exam just fine. The NCEES practice problems are good, do them as well, but you'll find that the NCEES questions are much easier.

3.0 out of 5 stars Another review book for the national 8 hour, January 21, 2012

This review is from: Practice Problems for the Civil Engineering PE Exam: A Companion to the Civil Engineering Reference Manual (Paperback)
I took the CA Civil PE in Oct 2011 and passed the survey + 8-hour portion first time (didn't study for the seismic). I studied one day a week for about 6 weeks prior to the test. I used this book in conjunction with the practice problems. I can tell you, this book is ridiculously too in depth. It's good if you like to go into the test completely over prepared but you will spend a lot of your time researching on a lot of material that won't be on the test. I definitely wouldn't recommend anyone studying the ENTIRE book but to focus primarily on the afternoon section you choose. You will have to brush all other materials but nothing too in depth e.g. you don't need to review the theorems or proofs of equations.

I wish there were more problems for each section, but the type and format of problems are very similar to the exam. Very helpful for studying

I used this to study for the April 2009 PE exam, and passed the first time! It covers so many subjects, many of them much more than you'll need for the exam. All the same, this is the best study guide / problems for the PE exam!

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone needs one to take the PE I guess, May 8, 2009
This review is from: Practice Problems for the Civil Engineering PE Exam: A Companion to the Civil Engineering Reference Manual (Paperback)
It's a great bookof knowledge. However, I have the 7th edition as well and the only thing different is that there are no practice problems in the 11th edition at the end of the chapters. Maybe 2 or 3 sections have been added. There is one big Construction section added, but you could prolly get that info from a construction engineering manual. So - in closing you need a Lindeburg text. I'm not sure it has to be 11th edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you need, all in one place, October 25, 2008
By
This review is from: Practice Problems for the Civil Engineering PE Exam: A Companion to the Civil Engineering Reference Manual (Paperback)
Just took the PE exam yesterday, and all I brought was this book and Lindeburg's reference manual. I used these two books exclusively to study, and found that they were sufficient to prepare me for what was on the test. I attribute this to the quality of the books and not to any pre-existing knowledge, because I was not a civil engineer in college, nor have I taken a PE review course.
