Book Description

On The Practice of Safety Fred A. Manuele, CSP, PE The benefits of thorough, professional safety management in the workplace—fewer accidents, higher productivity and cost efficiency, and improved morale—have never been more pronounced, or more sought after. As firms place greater emphasis on being competitive, safety professionals continue to develop smart, innovative programs to reduce the risk of costly accidents. The Second Edition of Manuele’s On the Practice of Safety offers a comprehensive review of the fundamental principles and practices of the safety profession, showing how top-quality workplace safety programs are developed, managed, and maintained. Spanning the breadth of the industrial process—from the design stage to manufacturing to transportation and storage—Manuele gets to the heart of what safety management is today, challenging commonly held assumptions to facilitate more effective solutions to everyday problems. As the new edition makes clear, much has happened in the area of workplace safety in recent years. Every chapter of the book has been revised to incorporate important new developments, systems, and data. This edition emphasizes the need to keep in balance the design and engineering, the operation management, and the task performance aspects of the practice of safety. Among the many new elements of the book, readers will find:
  • A new introductory chapter, "Transitions Affecting the Practice of Safety," addressing emerging safety issues
  • A thought-provoking causation model reflecting the links between safety design, management and task performance
  • A new chapter on performance measurement, the only such review in a safety text in recent years
  • A guide to developing effective incident investigation systems
  • New ergonomic applications for improving cost-effectiveness and productivity
  • The latest advances in incorporating safety into the design process, including the author’s groundbraking work for the National Safety Council’s Institute for Safety through Design
  • Current research on the connections between safety practice and quality assurance
  • More information on auditing, stressing the need to address management commitment
  • Developments in the accreditation of safety degree curricula
  • Expanded coverage of hazard analysis and risk assessment
Effective safety management begins with a thorough grounding in its principles and an understanding of how they can be applied from the earliest stages of decision-making. On the Practice of Safety, Second Edition is the best available introduction to the field’s fundamentals and basic applications. Whether read cover to cover or referred to in specific situations, it is an essential tool for both professionals and students of safety management.

From the Back Cover

An insightful examination of best safety practices

The completely revised and updated Third Edition of the benchmark On the Practice of Safety thoroughly covers subjects that must be mastered by anyone seeking to attain professional status in the practice of safety. Like its predecessors, the Third Edition provides a solid foundation for the study of the practice of safety in degree programs. Additionally, it serves as a basis for self-analysis by those safety professionals who seek to improve their performance, gain recognition from management for providing value, and achieve professional status.

On the Practice of Safety’s distinctive essay format provides a penetrating exploration of a variety of subjects not possible in a standard reference. The Third Edition expands on the content of the former edition, adding updated statistics to reflect recent trends and developments in the field. In addition to a greatly extended chapter on quality and safety, author Fred Manuele contributes four new chapters:

  • Heinrich Revisited: Truisms or Myths
  • Addressing Severe Injury Potential
  • Acceptable Risk
  • Behavior-Based Safety

Each chapter is a self-contained unit that offers comprehensive coverage of a particular topic. All of the chapters in the Third Edition reflect the increasing professional incidence of safety, occupational health, and environmental affairs falling under a common management, and address each issue accordingly. On the Practice of Safety continues to be an unparalleled resource on best safety practices. --This text refers to the Unknown Binding edition.
