As a private piano teacher, I couldn't imagine a more helpful book for promoting my small business! The author clearly explains why it is so vital to promote your teaching studio, and then provides hundreds and hundreds of great ideas that will help you to have a full studio and a full waiting list. His cheerful and enthusiastic style make this a quick and easy read. Mr. Johnstone tells you exactly how, where, and when to advertise, and offers suggestions as to other promotions. Far from expecting you to cold call or knock on doors, his creative ideas allow even shy teachers to help themsevles by helping others, so there is something in this book for every comfort level. My experience was that this book paid for itself in the first week I owned it! If you are a private music teacher (any instrument), you must own this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for the Home Studio Teacher., October 16, 2005
This review is from: The PracticeSpot Guide to Promoting Your Teaching Studio: How to Make Your Phone Ring, Fill Your Schedule, and Build a Waiting List You Can't Jump Over (Paperback)
This is a very practical guide for those music teachers trying to step out of the occasional role to full time home studio status. I was very impressed with the on target tips about networking and utilizing community resources to expand the `word-of-mouth' reach of your marketing efforts. If nothing else, this guide should offer you some validation for what you've done right, and ideas for what you've overlooked. Worth every penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT Resource for any Music Studio!, February 19, 2005

This is a MUST HAVE book for any private music teacher! Mr. Johnstone has done a terrific job of putting together practical and USEFUL marketing techniques. After moving to a small rural town from a large suburban area, I found myself with only 6 piano students. Using the ideas from this book, I KNOW my studio will continue to grow and prosper! I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone looking to have that "edge" that is needed to compete with other music teachers in their area.

I was a little skeptical when I ordered this book, but it's full of really good ideas. Philip Johnston has a good grasp on getting your studio business up to speed and keeping it there. I've read several books on the subject, but this one is by far the best. Even if you were to implement only one or two of his ideas it would be well worth the cover price.

Mr. Johnston is to be commended on his fine book explaining marketing techniques to the owner of a music studio. He makes it very clear that marketing is not about the individual but about the business instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book For A Piano Teacher's Library, May 2, 2010
This review is from: The PracticeSpot Guide to Promoting Your Teaching Studio: How to Make Your Phone Ring, Fill Your Schedule, and Build a Waiting List You Can't Jump Over (Paperback)
Personally I have taught piano for twenty one years and have been blessed with wonderful students and a full schedule. This book was refreshing on how Philip Johnson had run his studio. My book is highlighted and earmarked through the years of reading and re-reading the pages of information.

Every year I thumb through the book to remind myself of basic business knowledge and rev my creative teaching side for my students with new style recitals and classes. Philip is wonderful with his light humor manner in teaching piano lessons. I own all of his books but this is my favorite.

I would recommend this book to any music teacher or new music graduate to add to their music library.

3.0 out of 5 stars i was disappointed, February 21, 2012

OK. I admit that there is a lot of info here and some good ideas but this book seriously needs an update. Many of the links were no longer valid and I even had trouble with his website.
Also I think the book is overpriced, especially when considering the above.
I guess my biggest complaint was that the author displayed great passion about promoting his studio but nowhere did he express any passion towards educating or even music. Though it sounds like his studio is booked into the next century, i don't think I'd send my kids there and i know i wouldn't buy this book if i had the chance again.
