This book has great information for those looking to begin or expand their use of social media, student-faculty/student-student communication via emerging technologies. The Kindle edition is just wonderful as the links are active and you can go directly to the resources mentioned throughout the book.
This was a good book but the author seems a bit full of himself. The advice is practical and I will use it as I continue to integrate technology in my classroom.
I could hardly envision a better introduction to using emerging technologies in the classroom in a single self-contained resource. While this book recounts a personal journey, it also very well organized, and provides structured guidance. These experienced insights can help guide any educator through the maze of Internet tools, to discover many ways in which they can facilitate a fundamental shift in student engagement and learning.
While recovering from open-heart surgery in 2006, Instructor Michelle Pacansky-Brock started listening to educational podcasts during frequent walks, and was amazed at how much she learned from these early "Web 2.0" tools adopters and thought-leaders. She was inspired to experiment with the use of podcasts in her online course and this gradually led down the road to a wide variety of web-based tools and a learning journey of her own that resulted in significant changes to how she teaches today. The ultimate motivation behind these changes was the impact if had on the success of the students in her classes.
Even if you are able to use your computer well and are a good teacher, it is NOT the same as being an effective educator online. Taking your face-to-face class curriculum and transferring it online is like taking a round block and trying to shove it into a square hole. There is more to it than that! Michelle's book is extremely helpful in that it blends pedagogy with online tools (that you may not have heard of prior to reading her book--I didn't) so that you know what to consider and how to implement exciting educational activities that will both engage the student, help meet the standards, and create a social presence! Thanks for writing this, Michelle! :-)
If asked to recommend only one title to add to any educators' professional bookshelf, Best Practices for Teaching with Emerging Technologies would be it. Michelle Pacansky-Brock presents solid instructional practices designed to create exceptional quality in online learning experiences. She interjects personal practice into each of her chapters from flipped learning, to building a solid foundation, onto suggestions for an essential toolkit, and through effectively using technology tools for communicating and creating online. Pacansky-Brock not only offers a wealth of "nuts-and-bolts" advice for online educators, but takes her audience one step farther by sharing how to harness the potential of an array of emerging tech tools as a means to create true communities of learners connected through the experience. She is able to detail not only the how of best practice, but also the why with a clear voice and vision. Michelle Pacansky-Brock's book has become a "go-to" guide as our school considers the immense potential of providing well-conceived blended and online learning opportunities for our students. This title is highly recommended for all educators who currently teach or aspire to teach online. JE
The organization, content, and tips in this book are excellent! Michelle Pacansky-Brock's writing style is professional and is a quick and easy read.that will provide concrete ideas for infusing technology in the online teaching space.
A must read for anyone updating their teaching to improve student engagement and learning. Michelle takes us outside of the classroom walls and shares ideas that will support student exploration and critical thinking. She provides concrete resources and clearly articulates how the resources support student learning and engagement. All resources shared are supported by ideas and examples for integrating them in your teaching. Michelle has succeeded in writing a book that is encouraging and nonthreatening to even the most technophobic instructors.
As the Coordinator for Online Learning at the University of Rochester School of Nursing, I am always looking for resources to share with faculty to increase skills and abilities in online learning. "Best Practices for Teaching with Emerging Technologies" is one of the best such resources that I have come across. The book comprehensively reviews the most important tools in emerging education technology including Web 2.0 tools and mobile technologies. Even better, Michelle shares dozens of amazing pedagogical tricks and tips she uses to make her online classes engaging. Also, Michelle has written in an engaging style exemplifying the online learning principle of "immediacy". This is an excellent example of the style of writing I encourage faculty to use in their online discourse with students. When you read Michelle, you feel like she is right there with you engaging you in a conversation between friends. I highly recommend this book to anyone interest in online learning!
