Editorial Reviews

Review

". . . The major strength of the Brown text is its comprehensive coverage of the fundamentals of Texas politics--in particular its coverage of major institutions and description and analysis of local government. Second, it reads like a political science text without being too overwhelmed by discipline jargon. Third, there are enough contemporary examples of events and issues that can be used to guide students in relating their own experiences to the broader issue of Texas politics." - Franklin Jones, Texas Southern University

"PRACTICING TEXAS POLITICS is the most comprehensive, authoritative, and current of all the Texas government and politics textbooks available. It engages student interest through a variety of stimuli, including interesting and often ironic political cartoons, feature boxes filled with intriguing facts about Texas, comparisons of Texas with the other states, 'learning check' questions at the end of major sections, 'Point/Counterpoint' boxes that spell out opposing arguments on current political issues, colorful maps and photographs, and an ample marginal glossary." - James A. Norris, Texas A&M International University --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

12th edition is only missing 1 chapter from 13th edition. My teacher taught from lecture so it was not a problem. Good refernece to back up lecture. Alot cheaper than buying 13th edition.

As expected the book as a slight, albeit tolerable, liberal bias. The 2011-2012 edition manages to mention Tom Delay's "indictment" and "conviction" at least 10,000 times -- seemingly in every chapter and for no real reason. Hope the newer edition makes clear that he was formally acquitted and his prosecution was a gross miscarriage of justice. The book seems to espouse progressive ideas while explaining conservative ones with respectful pity -- which is, at least, better than disrespectful pity. All in all, a decent introductory text if you can get past these minor annoyances.

I do not like the Kindle version, I think it's because it's a textbook and for a chapter that has 15 pages, for the kindle it's about 60 pages to read, and I couldn't focus. I recently just ordered the actual textbook.
If you can read a textbook on the Kindle then get it :)

I do not like mandated textbooks. Over the years they seem to be dumbed down more and more. Based on this book and the class associated with it I apparently should be ashamed to be a Texan because we are not like all the other states and socializing everyrhing in sight. I was taught about a very different Texas 30 years ago.

This textbook is very easy to follow filled with current, up-to-date information. it has an interesting layout with layered material: text by the authors, political cartoons and graphs, internet resources, and selected readings by current authors about timely and applicable issues. I received it in mint condition.

This book had a lot of relevant information and was required for me to pass my TX government course. While it included a lot of facts and statistics I felt the representation of those facts reflected too strongly the author’s own biases.
