Metaphysics is important for the flourishing of Catholic theology,

This review is from: Praeambula Fidei: Thomism and the God of the Philosophers (Paperback)
McInerny seems to have two goals in mind with this book: 1) to defend the preambles of faith (metaphysics) and 2) to defend St. Thomas' continuity with (drawing upon) Aristotle. The second goal serves the first goal insofar as the preambles of faith have come under fire in the past century through the discrediting of Cardinal Cajetan who is accused of giving us just Aristotle (and not so much St. Thomas) in his commentaries of St. Thomas. McInerny points to both Gilson and de Lubac as being major promoters of such a critique of Cajetan. In this critique the question of Christian Philosophy is raised, and it is in the answering of this question that Gilson dissolves philosophy into theology (and hence the loss of the preambles of faith). This dissolution of philosophy into theology follows upon Gilson's thought that being (esse) can only be fully understood through revelation. In his positive response to Gilson, McInerny details the existence and nature of metaphysics while showing that St. Thomas draws his understanding of these things from Aristotle.
