5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Soundtrack & DVD
The Soundtrack from the film Prairie Home Companion is superb.
The tracks aren't in the same order as they occurred in the film, but must have been a bit rearranged for balance and listenability.

You don't have to see the movie to enjoy the soundtrack, and if you've seen the film, it's even better...

3.0 out of 5 stars Prairie Home Soundtrack
I was disappointed that the song that was played during the movie credits at the end of the movie was not on this soundtrack, CD or DVD! That was my favorite song. How can I find it?

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Soundtrack & DVD, June 17, 2006
This review is from: A Prairie Home Companion Original Motion Picture Soundtrack [Deluxe Limited Edition CD + DVD] (Audio CD)
The Soundtrack from the film Prairie Home Companion is superb.
The tracks aren't in the same order as they occurred in the film, but must have been a bit rearranged for balance and listenability.

You don't have to see the movie to enjoy the soundtrack, and if you've seen the film, it's even better.
I found myself wanting to applaude after several of the pieces during the film, but didn't want to seem like an amateur, nor did I wish to startle the old folks sitting in front of me; pieces such as "Gold Watch and Chain" by Streep and Keillor, "Frankie & Johnny" by Lohan, "Old Plank Road" by Robin & Linda Williams, "Coming Down From Red Lodge" by the Guys All-Star Shoe Band, and "Bad Jokes" by Harrelson and Reilly are the most memorable.
The film had all the great music I could have hoped for except for the omitted "Powdermilk Biscuits Theme." C'mon, GK---how do you expect to win the Oscar for Best Picture when you leave out the theme for Powdermilk Biscuits? Jeeze, Louise!

The DVD included with the Soundtrack is a real Bonus!
The highlights are Keillor's Catchup monolog, and the pieces played by the Guys All-Star Shoe Band: they are an outstanding group of extrordinarily talented and versatile musicians, a pleasure to watch and a joy to listen to!

I don't write many reviews but I just have to say that I love this soundtrack. I enjoy listening to the real radio show when I get the chance and this cd is very much like that show. :) I especially like the song "Bad Jokes".

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack, June 5, 2006

This soundtrack is an excellent piece on it's own and captures the classic sound of the Prairie Home Companion show. The performances are great and the accompanying DVD offers some exceptional moments from the film.

I was also able to import the Music into Itunes on my Mac without any problems. The songs sound great on my I-Pod.

4.0 out of 5 stars Patience is a virtue, especially in Lake Wobegon, June 16, 2006

This review is from: A Prairie Home Companion Original Motion Picture Soundtrack [Deluxe Limited Edition CD + DVD] (Audio CD)
If you've been having trouble importing this CD to your Mac with iTunes, take heart: I had much the same problem the first couple times I inserted the disk (it spins and does not mount on the desktop and didn't show up in iTunes). F12 or eject to get the CD out, and try it again. Third time was the charm for me: while it is doing a lot of spinning as it imports, it imported fine that time. As GK himself might say, there's nothing given to us that's worth its weight in told unless we have to cuss and struggle over it a little bit. (But one star off for the difficulties in importing for our very un-Lake Wobegon iPods!)

The soundtrack is itself a delight, like the film. My only quibble is that, like with many soundtrack albums, the music is not in the same sequence as it appeared in the film: Altman and Keillor took time and effort to build their story using the music, and to present it out of sequence loses some of the effect. Nevermind. It's easy to resequence the tracks any way you like 'em in iTunes, and you can even leave out Lindsay Lohan's brassy and funny "Frankie and Johnny" if it's not for you. A wonderful souvenir of one of my favorite films of the year.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Marvelous Meryl Streep, March 8, 2007
This review is from: A Prairie Home Companion Original Motion Picture Soundtrack [Deluxe Limited Edition CD + DVD] (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful collection of songs, sung with warmth and heart - a true treasury of music.
The highlight has to be, though, the beautiful voice of Meryl Streep. Not only is she the world's greatest living actress, but she is a profoundly talented and gifted vocalist. Her grace, warmth, depth, and beauty give a gorgeous elegance - and eloquence - to the songs she performs. I challenge anyone to listen to "Goodbye to My Mama" without becoming teary-eyed. Streep is, in every way, quite simply...extraordinary.
A highly recommended collection of entertaining and touching songs.
Great album!

If you like the radio program, you will love the film and music -- vintage Keillor & wonderful company... the quintessential performance/celebration, including the existential riff of finitude and endings...

5.0 out of 5 stars Prarie Home Companion CD is a must for any music lover!, June 13, 2006
This review is from: A Prairie Home Companion Original Motion Picture Soundtrack [Deluxe Limited Edition CD + DVD] (Audio CD)
The songs on this CD sound even better than they did in the movie.

My favorite tracks are the Woody Harrelson and Meryl Streep songs which I have been playing over and over.

If you liked the music in the film this CD delivers. It is always great and refreshing to hear the real actors doing the singing.

The video performances are an added bonus and looked great on my computer.

Also it worked perfectly on my iTunes.

This CD is a must!
