Great Vintage PHC!,

This review is from: A Prairie Home Companion 20th Anniversary: Four Compact Discs (Audio CD)
Truly some of the best of A Prairie Home Companion that I have ever heard. "The Perfect Day" is a personal favorite, and "Calling My Children Home" hits the heartstrings each time I hear it. I have checked this out from the local library so many times, I think I need to purchase a copy for them to replace the worn out tapes! And it's now time for me to get the CD version, and keep it for good! Heaven's it's tasty!

I love Prarie Home and Garrison, and this is a great collection. However, it is all music and Tales from Lake Wobegon - none of the other sketches or comedy routines I was hoping for. So, no complaints about what's on the four CDs - just complaints about what's not! I will try one of the other anniversary collections!

Color me displeased. I bought this for Julia, Lover's Waltz, Pioneer Waltz and some other items from my cassette and lo and behold they have been removed from this package. I still give it 5 stars overall because it is PHC but this is a warning for others. Ok, I am editing this as I just noticed a change... They added a table of contents... FROM THE TAPE. Removing content from one edition to another and then advertising the earlier more complete edition makes this just plain wrong.

Garrison keeler is at his best when he is telling these stories which he is best known for. Radio shows are way before my time and this was sort of an "acquired taste" for me. Now I can't get enough of him. I can listen to this over and over. It is very comforting and, as others have said, excellent on the road!

I had this set on cassette long ago and recently replaced it with a set on CD from amazon.com. I enjoy A Prairie Home Companion and enjoyed listening to the rest of the humor and music in this set, but the reason I bought a second set is for a Peter Ostroushko composition called "Pioneer Waltz" which is so beautiful it literally moves me to tears.
The same composition appears on another Peter Ostroushko CD, but this version is significant superior. Incredible music, easily worth the price of this set and then some. I've never heard anything like it. It is a profound work of art.

This series was wonderful, especially when I listened to it during a cross country trip. It was peaceful and gave the trip even more meaning. Radio shows were before my time, this was a Godsend!

PHC collection from 1974-94,

This review is from: Prairie Home Companion 20th Anniversary Collection (Audio Cassette)
The following comments are for the cassette audio book version of A Prairie Home Companion 20th Anniversary Collection. The material presented are the original recording selected from 1974-94 Prairie Home Companion shows.
The audio book consists of 4 standard tapes cassettes with a total run time of 6 hours. Each cassette plays 90 minuets; 45 minuets per side. Each side consists of a selection of songs and "News from Lake Wobegon" monologues. The songs and monologues on each tape side are taken from different shows during the twenty-year period 1974-94. Note these are not entire shows but cut and paste segments from various shows over twenty years. The packaging is as follows: on each tapes side is a listing of the song and monologue titles and the run times; the tapes are housed in standard audiocassette plastic boxes. An insert sleeve in the tape box lists the titles and credits per side. The four tape boxes slip into a four-sleeve fold out holder. The holder "face" identifies the tape number, track title, show date and show location. The four-sleeve holder folds over and slides into a cardboard slipcase. Also included is a 22-page booklet with photographs, interviews and comments by the cast. This is a well-constructed, very sturdy package. I purchased my copy as a remainder in 2010 and it was "factory fresh" in every respect. To my delight the audio quality of the tapes after 16 years in storage were excellent. I listen to "Prairie Home Companion" very infrequently. It was a shear delight to play these tapes. The humor and music was just wonderful. Some of the "News from Lake Wobegon" segments were so funny I was in tears. Mr. Keillor and company is to be commended for this terrific collection.

This my first introduction to Garrison Keillor and I've since never missed an piece of work by him. How I laughed to "O Captain, My Captain" and "Tomato Butt"!! And of course, the memorable "Casey at Bat". It's wonderful to listen to over and over. You would not go wrong purchasing this item, nor buying any of his works! Highest Recommendations!
