On his highly acclaimed radio program, Garrison Keillor asked listeners to send in their favorite folk songs. The songs had to be "ones you have heard from someone else" and "to which you remember the words mostly." His request laid the groundwork for this collection of true folk songs: those passed from one person to another and subject to change.
