This book is the first book of prairie lampshade designs in the stained glass industry and was meant to complement the window designs in "prairie designs for stained glass windows". At the time it was published, there were no prairie style lamp bases in the industry in metal or wood, so the book has instructions for making a base of stained glass. Now there are lamp bases available in wood and metal for these shades.

About the Author

The designs in this book match the window designs in "prairie designs for stained glass windows", so that a matching lamp and window can be made. This is an excellent book for those new to lamp making because the designs have straight lines. The designs also vary in complexity so that there are designs for beginners as well as advanced hobbyists.

One of the reasons I purchased this book (aside from the obvious) is because the author's review said that instructions were included for making stained glass lamp bases, since prairie lamp bases were hard to find (at the time the book was published).

The pattern book that was delivered to me had pictures of stained glass lamp bases on the cover, but there were no instructions inside on how to accomplish this. So... in my opinion, it was false advertising (Maybe this is a subsequent printing of the book and the patterns were omitted. Still it was disappointing.)

The patterns themselves were fairly run-of-the-mill. It would have been just as well to have one full-sized pattern with lots of smaller examples.

This book contains wonderful square lamp designs and has fully detailed instructions. I made my first lamp shade as a gift for my hubby and he loves it! I plan to make one for my desk as well and the complementary panels are in this author's panel books.

This book by Alex Spatz is the fifth book of his I have purchased, and it is as excellent if not better than the others. All of his books on stained glass are so easy to follow and the designs are wonderfully crafted. The book "Prairie Lamps" was very helpful and the suggestions were very inciteful. Excellent book!!!
