Several years ago I adopted a 2 year old German Shepherd under the pretense that the owner was moving and couldn't take him with.

It didn't take long for me to discover the true motivation. Brody was prone to uncontrollable diarrhea.

Long story short, after many weeks of frustration, gaining recognition on a first name basis a the carpet rental place, and much money spent at the vet, I learned that Brody suffers from IBS - Irritable Bowel Syndrome. (Interesting side fact: The vet I take him to happens to be the vet his previous owner took him to. They know Brody very well, and he loves them. But they did NOT know he had diarrhea problems. Apparently his previous owner spent two years cleaning up after him without ever being motivated enough to mention his issues to the vet or spend the money to have him tested.)

He was put on medication and a prescription diet. The food alone cost $80 a week, and while it DID do the trick of managing his issues, that's a LOT of money to spend on food for one dog.

So I began researching IBS and how to manage it with diet. Everything pointed to trying out better, higher quality foods - either a raw diet, or higher end dry food.

I tried many different options, but most of them proved to be too rich for Brody. I finally came across Nature's Variety.

Brody is now 7 years old. He weighs 105 pounds (an ideal weight for his large frame) -- the vet said he'd never weigh more than 80. He needs no medication other than occasionally some Metamucil as a fiber supplement to help him maintain gut health. He still has the energy of a puppy. His coat is shiny. I can even feed him treats or other mild variations from his diet (in strict moderation).

I have a 2.5 and 1.5 year old dogs. The older one - he's very picky with his foods ever since we had him at 6 months old. I tried everything from the stores, grain free ones - certain kibbles he'd like for a month, then he'd stop eating. I did make homemade meals for them, that too, he stopped after a while. I put some cheese and cottage cheese in his kibbles, his appetite still doesn't improve. He'd run away at the word "Mealtime" - mealtime was like a torture for him - I had to fight with him most of the times. From time to time I ignored him, but usually on the 4th day, I had to make sure he ate. That's how stubborn he's with foods - he wouldn't eat for days ! His coat grew dull, he looked rather lethargic all the times - and he itched a lot, but he too refused to eat his Omega 3 capsule supplement. He'd gag or throw up when it's forced in his mouth. Anyway, I saw the Prairie raw food at Petco - I was tempted to try, but couldn't do so... it'd be too expensive, beyond our budget. Next to it, they had the kibble version which is cheaper. Oh well, why not. Got the venison ones since it may reduce his allergy. And oh my..... he seems to love it.... !! Mealtime is no longer a torture for him. He'd jump out from his couch and devour his food right away. No need to fight anymore - I am just happy to be able to do other things now. I am on the 3rd month now and have been getting the 27 lbs package, and he's still as happy as before. He's also on Omega 3 supplements - the chewable ones - from Dr Foster & Smith, which he takes without a fuss. His coat is improving, he's no longer itchy. We can see a higher energy level in him - he starts playing more with his little brother (who is very food motivated and is crazy about this food too). Can't be happier..... I hope he'll continue to love this kibbles - but so far so good !

Me, my beagle, and my lab all love this stuff for various reasons. I tried so many different brands of dry kibble and could never find anything to fit all our needs. The most expensive and nutrient dense foods made my dogs sick, like diarrhea explosions sick. No matter how slowly I transitioned them, their butts always exploded in protest.

Then there were some premium foods with a little less protein but they wouldn't eat it! Doesn't matter how nutritious a food is if they won't dig in. So my search continued in the grain free department until I finally decided to try a food with just a little grains but still using premium ingredients. Besides, grain free uses potatoes, high quality foods like this one use brown rice. I hardly see the problem and I personally prefer brown rice over potatoes anyway.

So to my amazement and absolute joy both of my dogs eat this up with enthusiasm--and their poop has been small and firm! Being someone who picks up my dogs poop everyday I can't stress enough how awesome that is! Maybe it's the freeze dried RAW coating that makes it taste a bit better? I'm trying to teach my dogs to communicate using smoke signals so maybe one day I'll find out.

There haven't been any stomach issues, the ingredients are high quality, and I like how Natures Variety has their own manufacturing plant in Lincoln Nebraska--the good ol' USA! And they only make their own line of food--not like other companies who outsource and produce 50 different kibbles on the same manufacturing line.

So in the end I truly believe I have found the mecca of kibble! Of course each dog responds differently to any type of food but it's working great for us! Plus they still get some table scraps at dinner too...and some salmon strip treats, and Greenies, and chicken strips, and the occasional bully stick. Spoiled? Nah--Just part of the fam! =)
