The children are trapped at theschoolhouse by a blizzard and they run out of coal to heat with. During this blizzard one of the children gets sick. Miss Martin has to try to get her to a Doctor. With the help of her former student, who flys an airplane, all turns out well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A childhood favorite, May 5, 2007
This review is from: Prairie School (Paperback)
When I was a kid (probably a fourth and fifth grader) I loved all of Lois Lenski's books and PRAIRIE SCHOOL was my absolute favorite. What kid hasn't wondered what it would be like to be trapped for several days at school? The book is probably a bit dated but still worth a look for the thoughtful child who loves reading about a time and place different than their own. One caution Amazon makes this sound like a picture book for "babies and preschoolers". Though the book does include illustrations from the author it is a chapter book most appropriate for the upper elementary grades.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of "Prairie School" by Lois Lenski, May 21, 2009
This review is from: Prairie School (Paperback)
I can't believe this wonderful classic is out of print. It's based on the great blizzard of 1949, which trapped those on the prairies in their homes for weeks, even months. Ten-year-old Delores Wagner and her older brother Darrell attend a one-room prairie school. Miss Martin is their dedicated teacher, living in a bleak apartment behind the classroom. The children, particularly Delores, find her fascinating because she is from the city and has a car. A sudden blizzard traps the children at school. At first, they find it a great adventure. Delores even refuses to go home when her father comes for her. When she falls seriously ill, Miss Martin must find a way to get her to the hospital in town.

Younger children will enjoy having the book read to them. Older children could do some online research about the 1949 blizzard.
