This review is from: The Praxis Series Official Guide (Paperback)
I bought this to study for the Praxis I Reading, Writing and Mathematics tests. I was an A-B student throughout High School and College but I had not taken a math course in almost ten years so I really needed to review. There are two tests for each area of study so I took both Math tests and reviewed my scores along with the explanations at the end. I did OK on the practice tests but not perfect. The explanations really helped. I also read through the Reading section but did not take any of those tests. I barely reviewed the Writing section. When I got my results back I had scored above average in everything but I did best in Mathematics - I got perfect scores in all sections except Geometry, where I missed a couple. My worst score was in Writing. I highly recommend this book as a study guide.

This guide was perfect for studying for the Praxis Exam. The material is fairly basic to begin with but I would've had a much harder time on the exam had I not used this text to review. The guide reviewed all the basic materials you will need for the test, provides samples of all the types of questions as well as sample essay questions and different level graded essays. When I took the test a few weeks ago my essay topic was one of the exact topics from the book! The practice tests are super helpful and realistic, even if you are taking the computerized test like I did. This book allowed me to find all the information I may have already known and keep it available for the test. I was able to finish each section with time left over because I had the knowledge ready in my brain and the confidence of studying and taking the practice tests. I HIGHLY recommend this guide. (By the way, the scores are out of a possible 190 and I got a 185 Math, 184 Reading and am awaiting my writing scores - which I feel great about!) Good Luck!!

Sample tests are not representative of the real deal...,

I purchased the Praxis Official Guide 2008 in preparation for the Praxis I exam. Although the reading and writing sections were similiar to the sample tests in this guide, the math section did not scratch the surface of the types of problems I was confronted with.
In fact, I read and reread the preparation tips several times. I practiced the previous tests given religiously, and I memorized all of the formulas suggested in this book. I went into the testing area feeling confident and prepared, and left the examination feeling overwhelmed and defeated. I'm still waiting for a response from ETS.org regarding this situation. My suggestion is to look for other resources to properly prepare yourself for the Praxis I.

Some of the problems in the PPST I test were the same as the problems in this book. The Essay Topics section was right on the money. The topic I was given was the same as one of the topics in this book. I wish I would have studied this section more. I also purchased REA PRAXIS PPST tests.
I passed two of the three tests - Reading: 175; Math: 185, and I am still waiting for the results from the writing test. If you are preparing for the PRAXIS I test, I strongly suggest you get both books.

I would recommend this book for anyone taking the Praxis I. I had not had a math class in years so I really needed a refresher. This book provided problems and detailed explanations. I actually did better on the math section than any other section. The practice tests are very useful and are almost identical to the actual test. The Praxis II section only provides an overview of each section and a few practice questions. Overall, a great value.

I bought the Praxis series official guide by ETS to study for the Praxis I. I have been out of college for several years and wished to refresh on the basics. After taking the Praxis I the first time (I took the computerized version) I realized how wonderful this study guide was. I was able to pass all three sections the first time. This study guide was a huge help. I would strongly recommend everyone who is taking the Praxis I to buy this as their study guide. My advice: watch your TIME!! Practice the test with a timer, espically the essay! I ran out of time and didn't have time to edit or proofread mine. Best of Luck.

This book it is very helpful in preparing you for Praxis I. I took the computer-based Praxis I yesterday. It had been over 10 years since I had a standardized test. I was concerned that I would not do well. I worked through the review problems and the practice tests. I am happy to report that I scored 12 points higher than required on reading and 8 points higher on math. When I receive my writing score in a few weeks, I will update this review with the margin of success. I am sure that I've earned a score that exceeds the requirement on the writing portion and therefore will have passed the Praxis.
It is important to note that this book WILL NOT be useful when preparing for Praxis II. It mentions the various Praxis II tests briefly. You will need another publication to help prepare for your specific Praxis II exam. **Update 01/04/11 - I know it's way late, but I did pass the writing portion of the exam easily. Good luck on the exam and much success in your teaching career!

perfect study guide!,
This review is from: The Praxis Series Official Guide (Paperback)
This book is genius! I am going through lateral entry and have not had any prior content knowledge for the Praxis I before I took it (other than middle school classes which were 10 years ago). I studied a couple days a week for a few weeks and this book really helped bring everything back to mind for me. I focused mostly on the practice test questions which helped me the most (I rarely reviewed the formulas and recommendations on how to study and retain the knowledge). I received a 178 in Math, 179 in Reading and I'm still waiting on my Writing score, which I believe I did well on also. Definitely purchase, it's worth it for the price!
PS - only the last half of this book is dedicated to the Praxis II (general knowledge, nothing specific). If you are looking for assistance with the Praxis II, I don't recommend this book, get another study guide that focuses directly in your Praxis II test subject!

I purchased this book for the sole purpose of preparing for the PPST in reading, writing, and math. I went into the exam completely confident with the skills I got from this book. This book is a must have if you have any nervousness at all about taking the exam.

Since the PPST test consists of three tests (math, reading, writing) seemed that this guide would have THREE PPST TESTS. NOPE. One math, one reading, and one writing test. The CD contains the exact same questions as the book. Get another book.
