Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

Excerpt Then I started Pinpoint Praying. Along with using the Bible as my prayer guide, I started asking very specific and focused things of God. Instead of asking God to be with my wife, I asked him to make her holy, to protect her from the pull of materialism, to heal her of some specific wounds, to expand her ministry impact, to put truth in her heart and wisdom on her tongue. Instead of asking God to bless my marriage, I prayed that he would help us to love each other unconditionally, to model his love to the world, to willingly serve and yield to each other, and to know true intimacy. Do you see the difference? I sure did. As my prayers became more specific to God, so did my answers from him. The very pinpoint prayers I began praying turned into pinpoint answers for my marriage. How do you pray for your marriage? Do you toss up the random Lord please be with us kinds of prayers, or do you set very specific and biblical requests before God? I can tell you from experience, the more you focus and specify your requests to God for your marriage, the more direct answers you'll see.

From the Back Cover

"Whether you've been married fifty years or fifty days, you need to read and apply the principles in this book."--Dennis Rainey, president and cofounder, FamilyLife We know marriage is too hard to handle alone. But when we come to God for help, too often our prayers are lifeless and vague or even selfish. God wants more for you--in your prayer life and in your marriage. Will Davis Jr. combines God's teachings on marriage with practical guidance on praying for your marriage using "pinpoint prayers" that are bold, direct, specific, and biblical. You will learn how to pray specific biblical verses for: •emotional and spiritual intimacy in marriage •your spouse's spiritual growth, even if he or she is an unbeliever •protection from marriage temptations •your marriage's purpose and mission Each chapter includes suggestions for how you can "Pray Big Today," relevant Scripture verses, and prayers. A final section offers a 31-day prayer plan with verses and pinpoint prayers to help you get started. Pray Big for Your Marriage will challenge and inspire you to ask God to do big things in and through your marriage. "This book will help couples not only survive marriage but also take it to a higher level."--Dr. Samuel Adams, coauthor, The Ten Commandments of Dating and Devotions for Dating Couples "There is no greater gift a husband and wife can give each other than to pray together. Will Davis helps guide couples through that process with this insightful and compelling book."--Rick Johnson, founder, Better Dads; author, That's My Son "As a marriage and family therapist, I cannot stress strongly enough the importance of praying for your marriage, but most couples don't even know where to start. This book provides a much-needed road map."--Rick Reynolds, LCSW, founder, Affair Recovery Center Will Davis Jr. is the founding and senior pastor of Austin Christian Fellowship, a nondenominational church in Austin, Texas. He is the author of Pray Big and is an avid hiker, mountain climber, and water-skier. He and his wife, Susie, have three children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Disciplines made practical January 11, 2011

While I'm not completely finished reading the book yet, I've gotten more out of the first few pages of "Pray Big for Your Marriage," than I have from any other Christian marriage/devotion book. I would encourage people to read this even if they are in the dating and certainly the engagement stages, too. There are so many encouraging reminders about how to specifically pray through scripture for your relationship so it helps me avoid the "please bless [my spouse] today" prayer, which, although sincere, isn't specific or anything that is really drawing either of us closer to God's word. I ordered extra copies to give to friends and family!

More About the Author

Hi, My name is Will Davis Jr.(Learn more at willdavisjr.com.) I was born in Austin January 6, 1962 (you can do the math). I have been a serious follower of Christ since 1978 and have been in Christian ministry since 1980.

I married the lovely Susie Gerrie on June 1, 1985 (Susie was 6 at the time. It was an arranged marriage). Susie and I have three awesome kids--Will 3, Emily and Sara.

Besides my faith and family, I'm passionate about . . . .

. . . my hometown of Austin. I love Austin's beauty, quirkiness and rich cultural diversity.

. . . . Austin Christian Fellowship. Susie and I helped start ACF in May of 1993. It's been our great joy to serve our city with such high-caliber Christian people.

. . . . prayer. I was blessed growing up to have some great mentors in prayer. I love prayer and I know it works. I've written four books on prayer and hope to write more.

. . . . mountains. I grew up hiking in the Colorado Rockies and I had my first real God encounter alone on a mountain at age 12. I'm a Texas kid, but some of my best memories are in the Rockies.

. . . . missions. You will frequently find me serving in a third world country.

. . . . and yes, the Doobie Brothers! I've been a Doobie fan since I was a kid and yes, I did inhale.

The Fine Print: Will holds a BA in History from Baylor University, and a Master's of Divinity and a Doctor of Ministry from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Will was named a Baylor University Outstanding Young Alumni in 2001 and an Honorary Alumnus of Baylor's Truett Seminary in 2003.
