This review is from: Pray for God's Wisdom: The Mystical Sophiology of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky (Hardcover)
This book is a study of the unknown twentieth century sophiologist, Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky. While the world knows much of Vladimir Soloviev, Sergei Bulgakov and Pavel Florensky, most people were unaware , until recently, of the existence of a fourth Eastern Slavic sophiologist, primarily because Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky wrote on the subject almost exclusively in Ukrainian, and his writings are only recently becoming known to non-Ukrainian audiences. Sheptytsky's own personal spirituality is shown in this book to be integrally tied to his understanding of Sophia, the Wisdom of God, which is simultaneously the second hypostasis of the Holy Trinity (the pre-incarnate Son), a gift of the Holy Spirit, an infused virtue, an intellectual virtue and a moral virtue, as well as a characteristic of humanity. The kinship between these various wisdoms allows for divinization to occur, as God allows human beings to partake in God's own life through this wisdom. Sheptytsky's sophiology is compared with that of his Russian contemporaries and he is found to be more faithful to the patristic tradition, albeit influenced by Thomism. Patristic antecedents for Sheptytsky's various are explored. Several appendices carrying important extracts of Sheptysky's sophiological writings in English translation are offered. There is a helpful index to names and terms. For anyone interested in Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky's own spirituality, this is a good place to start. The book is in fact still in print and availaible from its publisher: The Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute of Eastern Christian Studies, Saint Paul University, 223 Main Street, Ottawa, ON K1S 1C4.
