5.0 out of 5 stars A bedtime must-read for us
My daughter got this book for Christmas when she was just two months old. To my dismay, it would be several months before she would be content to sit in my lap and listen to me read books, but now that we do that every night (beginning at about 14 months old), "Prayer for a Child" is one of our very favorites. It is one of about four that we MUST read each...

1.0 out of 5 stars Faith vs. Reason
This children's book is about christian mythology of a supernatural god, and teaches children to base belief on blind faith rather than reason, science and common sense... (What is the famous quotation: "Nothing fails like prayer"?)

My daughter got this book for Christmas when she was just two months old. To my dismay, it would be several months before she would be content to sit in my lap and listen to me read books, but now that we do that every night (beginning at about 14 months old), "Prayer for a Child" is one of our very favorites. I, like other reviewers, disagree with Horn Book's evaluation of the illustrations being "dated." I also find them sweet and simple and beautiful.

Our paperback copy is coming apart so it's time to replace it with a hardback.

I love that this covers all the bases of prayer that are relevant to children - toys, home, family, food, friends, all the people in the world. (not necessarily in that order)

Reading this book to my daughter will be a treasured memory for a lifetime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just beautiful!, September 16, 2004
By
This review is from: Prayer for a Child (Hardcover)
I am always on the lookout for classic children's books, especially re-releases, and especially Caldecott honor or medal books. I was surprised to find this recently in an airport bookstore, as I had not seen it anywhere else! The book is just beautiful. I had been on the lookout for a children's book that introduces the concept of prayer in a sweet way, without being too scary or too overtly religious or too over-the-top or too boring. You'd be surprised how little is out there. This old book fit the bill. The illustrations are sweet, simple, and gorgeous, and the words are snug, cozy, warm and comforting. I loved everything about it, and bought it immediately. What a treasure; so glad for the re-issue!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great Classic!, January 2, 2005

QueeNess (Crystal Lake, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Prayer for a Child (Hardcover)
When my oldest child was born (he is now 22) a very good friend of my mother's sent him this book. When he was old enough for me to read to him, I read this book every night. After my daughter was born (19 years ago) I read it to her, also. Eventually, I had to read the book seperately to them, because they wanted their special time with me, and they each had special parts of the book that was their favorite.

My friend's daughter recently had a baby girl, and when I was pondering what to send, my daughter suggested this book, because it was so special to her. I came to Amazon to see if it was still in print, and thankfully it is! This book is very special for many reasons. It is a thorough, but simple prayer that covers everything a child may have been concerned about throughout the day. The illustrations are good, and it is these illustrations that my children remember and cherish so well after all these years. I got out the worn out book, with torn pages, and relived the special bedtime readings that I had with my children. I highly recommend this book -- it was special for me, and my children just as "Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep" was special when I was young.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful illustraions, Gentle prose, June 6, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Prayer for a Child (Paperback)
My 16 month old received this book for his 1 year birthday, and I think we've read it at least 3 times a day since then. The illustraions are warm, old-fashioned, and draw in the innocent and gentle nature of the children reading the book. It's absolutely lovely!

5.0 out of 5 stars A timeless, beautifully illustrated classic for young children, June 30, 2006
This review is from: Prayer for a Child (Hardcover)
This Caldecott Medal-winning book has been a classic ever since its original publication in 1941. Rachel Field originally wrote this simple, endearing prayer for her own little girl, but countless young children and their families have been blessed by it over the years. The prayer itself has wide appeal, as it basically just asks God to protect the important things in any child's life - family, friends, toys, and all the other children in the world. The really exquisite, life-imbued pictures of Elizabeth Orton Hand illustrate every part of the prayer, allowing young children who have not yet learned to read to follow along with the prayer as it is read by a loved one. I've no doubt that the reading of this little book could easily become a nightly ritual in many a household. Kids will love the wonderful, colorful artwork, while Christian parents will value the message being communicated to their little one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful little prayer for a young child., May 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Prayer for a Child (Paperback)
This is a short, beautiful, and simple prayer for young children which won the 1945 Caldecott Medal for best illustration in a children's book. However, I disagree with the Horn review. For a young child, the illustrations aren't dated; they are simple, sweet, and just right. I also suspect that this was probably an important book for young children of the in the U. S. during the end of World War II. It undoubtedly help those who missed their fathers.

4.0 out of 5 stars First Graders Review of Prayer for a Child by Rachel Field, February 25, 2008
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Prayer for a Child: Diamond Anniversary Edition (Hardcover)
In this story, the little girl blesses her food, and then she says some more prayers. She asks Jesus to let no danger frighten her until the morning comes, and then she blesses her toys and shoes and furniture.
The little girl blesses her mom and dad and thanks God for their wonderful care of her. She asks Jesus to keep all the other children safe and free from fear.

I recommend this book to other children because I think it is a good book, and I think they will like it too. It's a whole prayer that I think is nice to say before bed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful bedtime book!, November 17, 2004
This is a favorite in our house at bedtime. Our girls (5, 3 & 2) love to look at and talk about the adorable pictures. They love to read along with me also. We are purchasing our second copy because the baby tore up the last couple of pages not too long ago. We can't live without the complete copy! A great gift idea also.

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book on appreciating the simple things in life, December 1, 1997
By A Customer
This is a special, uncomplicated, old-fashioned book about teaching a child the basics of prayer. It starts with the simple things: keeping us safe, thanking God for friends, family, and yes, even my special painted chair. The illustrations are reminiscent of an earlier, kinder era. We love this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sentimental, Old-Fashioned, Sweet, April 27, 2000
My 2-yr.-old daughter and I found this book at the library. She loved it right away and asked me to read it to her over and over. So, of course, I had to buy her her very own copy. She still asks me to read it over and over. We both love it each time through. Like an earlier reviewer, I also disagree with the Horn Review. This book is not out-dated at all and it is filled with sweet sentiment. Any small child would adore this book.
