Book Description

July 25, 2002
"Like a youngster discovering for the first time what the parade is all about, one who is captured by meekness learns God’s true purpose for life. It causes the heart to ponder the meaning of one’s existence, tug on the Father’s sleeve for an answer and be lifted to His shoulders for a clear view."

And so, Kenn Gividen, author of The Prayer of Hannah, teaches his readers the essence of meekness, the third of eight character traits revealed in the book.

Gividen, a marketing executive and former pastor, originally wrote The Prayer of Hannah as a series of Sunday school lectures. He crafted the first three lessons into manuscript format. Within three weeks, a major Christian publisher offered Gividen a contract and a sizeable advance.

That was in the Spring of 2001. In December, The relationship was cordially ended when Gividen requested a letter of termination from the publisher. That, he says, was an answer to prayer.

He explains why:

"I remember hearing Hal Lindsey [author of the best selling Late Great Planet Earth] on television noting that his book had sold 37 million copies," Gividen recalls.

Inspired by the thought that millions could be so blessed by one person’s efforts, Gividen decided to forge ahead and publish The Prayer of Hannah.

Drawing from nearly two decades of successful marketing, the author launched Just Folks Publishing Company. Even before the book was off the press, the newly formed publisher was inundated with hundreds of requests from Christian bookstores.

Gividen found himself in the promising position of having a substantial back order weeks before the book’s release. And, five weeks after the official publication date, The Prayer of Hannah had sold out of the warehouse.

The author/publisher attributes his early success to three factors: his distributor’s sales team, an attractive cover design and, more importantly, early positive reviews. And of course, fervent effectual prayer.

One reviewer, for example, noted that chapter nine, alone, was worth the price of the book. (The Prayer of Hannah is listed for $12.99, or about 10 cents per page.) That chapter unlocks Hannah’s secret for enduring persecutions.

Other chapters explore humility, brokenness and desire as well as mercy, purity and personal peace.

Another reviewer pointed to chapter four as an example of the author’s talent for writing. Gividen, however, identifies the final chapter as his personal favorite. Here, he quotes a passage from his novel, Back Home in Round Hill and reviews the book’s eight character traits.

The author notes that The Prayer of Hannah contains a surprise ending. Actually, it’s a "hidden message"—one which only the most observant of readers will notice. He does, however, provide a hint to that hidden message in the very last sentence of the book. And the reader will find a clue in the last footnote. Take a look! Do you see it?

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

The Prayer of Hannah sold out of its first printing — just five weeks after the official publication date. There is good reason. This little book picks up where The Prayer of Jabez, and other fine works on prayer, leave off. The author focuses on the efficiency of an Almighty God who delights to answer prayer.

The author will point you to eight character traits which are outlined in the New Testament, demonstrated in the life of Hannah and made manifest through her prayer. In what some people are calling a peculiar stroke of genius, the author leaves it up to the reader to discover the source of those eight dynamics. It is, in fact, a hidden message revealed only in the final footnote of the final chapter; page 127.

Because this book was originally written as a series of lessons, it is well suited to use in a Bible study setting.

From the Author

Originally, I had no intention of publishing The Prayer of Hannah. I wrote this book as a series of Sunday School lessons for a little church I attended in Columbus, Indiana. But realizing there was a spiritual appetite for prayer, I wrote out my first three Sunday school lessons in manuscript format and submitted them to a few publishers. Within weeks, a publisher contacted me, sent me a contract and a sizeable royalty check. That was all the encouragement I needed to complete the manuscript. However, some months later, I was listening to Hal Lindsey speak on the Trinity Broadcasting Network. Lindsey mentioned that his book, The Late Great Planet Earth, had sold tens of millions of copies. The Holy Spirit used that testimony to prompt me to consider self publishing. My publisher graciously cancelled my contract, allowing me to self publish. Just Folks Publishing Company was founded and, July 1, 2002, my ten-part Sunday school series, The Prayer of Hannah, became a reality.

The Prayer of Hannah went beyond my expectations and gave me something to hold on to and sink my teeth into. The author went to the core of effective prayer and offered eight ways to live an effective Christian life. I am amazed by the power of this little book. The message was timely and brought about a shift in my whole way of thinking. Mature christians will find this book satisfying and will feel the tug and pull of a "higher calling". Definately buy this book, you will read it time and time again.

This review is from: The Prayer of Hannah (Hardcover)
Mr. Gividen has brought us insights that challenge us to have a closer walk with our Creator. The breakdown of the content in this small, simple prayer has caused me to take a closer look at how I daily live. He has given anyone that reads this book an excellent guideline on seeking God's will and purpose in their lives. The analogies in each chapter gave me a better understanding of the points being made. This book has been a blessing to me personally, as well as those I encounter, as I put into practice these wonderful dynamics.
Job well done Kenn!!

Read this book and you'll be able to tell the author has practiced what he writes about. If the Bible is God's love letters to His people, The Prayer Of Hannah is an instruction manual for how to write back, so to speak. Thanks Kenn Gividen for opening your God-seeking heart to us and sharing the secrets of a life led in pursuit of the highest.
