Who hasn't wanted to communicate with God better? Well, I have, and now I am able to after reading this small, delight- ful book by Dr. Bruce Wilkinson. It is not preachy, dull or long. Who hasn't wanted to communicate with God better? Well, I have, and now I am able to after reading this small, delight- ful book by Dr. Bruce Wilkinson. It is not preachy, dull or long. In a short time, you can read the whole book, and find yourself hungry to know what the author is talking about. So you keep on reading it over and over and finally you start to get it! Then you make copies of the Prayer and tape them on your bathroom mirrors to remind you. Then you start praying this prayer every morning and evening. Pretty soon it is in your sub- conscious and you are praying all day long when something comes up. This is so great! What more could you want than to be in touch with your Heavenly Father? Well, so try it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Challenge to Discipleship, February 20, 2001
By

This review is from: The Prayer of Jabez: Bible Study (Paperback)
This is a must read for every Christian! I was introduced to this book at a men's prayer breakfast. A man stood up and testified to the power of this prayer. He highly recommended this book. I bought a copy and read it over a couple of days during carpool time. It challenges the reader to pray Jabez' prayer asking for God to bless me + expand my territory + keep me from evil that I might not cause pain. What a terrific prayer! Bruce illustrates the parts of the prayer with explanations and illustrations of how it's worked in his life. I now pray this every day, resting in the knowledge that God will answer this prayer with exciting opportunities and blessings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Criticism answered, August 23, 2001

First, let me say that I found the book, "Prayer of Jabez", very inspiring. So much so that I have read it six times. Using the devotional and the original book, I led a morning bible study for five days that everyone participating enjoyed greatly. Our church in in the midst of using the book for an eight week Sunday night study.

As for the criticism voiced in "Mistake-ridden", I can only say that the Bible Study and Leaders Guide were probably rushed to press without taking necessary time to check out all the references. The Jude reference mentioned is obviously Judges.

All other thoughts aside, it is wonderful to see a Christian book capture the attention of so many readers that it have been on the best seller lists as long as Jabez has. I might add that "Secrets of The Vine" is better than Jabez, and I look for great blessings from it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent content, lacks continuity, November 30, 2001
By
This review is from: The Prayer of Jabez: Bible Study (Paperback)
I wrote a glowing review of the Prayer of Jabez on December 13, 2000. I gave it five stars and still consider it to be one of the best books on how to pray. I was looking forward to the Prayer of Jabez Bible Study. I could hardly wait until it was published. Now, I have taught through the Bible Study with a small group at my church. I'm ready now to review it for you.

I found the study to have some excellent content. Christians need to know the information contained in this study. However, I found that the study lack continuity (thus my three star rating). The study states that you can do the study without reading through the Prayer of Jabez at the same time. Several members of our group took that advice. I think it was detrimental to their study. The book flows well and keeps you connected. The study does not flow as well, is spread over four weeks, and doesn't keep you connected to the weekly theme very well. I would definitely advise using the book with the study.

One difficult part of the study is that there is no answer key. Some of the Scripture references related to the questions did not seem to connect at all. I even have the reprinted editions that Multnomah re-released after fixing the mistakes in the first printing. I also used the leader's guide for the study. The leader's guide doesn't reveal the author's thinking on all the questions either. It does provide a basic guide to facilitating the small group, but not much more than that. I had to write my own teaching plans for our group.

One other criticism. The study looks at the four sections of Jabez's prayer. Wilkinson here fleshes out the biblical meaning of Blessing, Territory, Hand and Keep Me From Evil. I think the study, and those going through the study, would have benefited from one more week dedicated to the exploration of what it means to be honorable in the eyes of God. The book addresses it, but the study does not.

Anyway, the study has great content, even if it lacks continuity. I would definitely recommend it. I hope you enjoy it and I hope God will bless you indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do You Want To Know How To Talk to God?, August 6, 2001

After someone showed me a copy of this book in the

Doctor's office, I was curious. And when I saw this book was on the New York Times Bestseller list, wow,

I was really curious. So when I finally got around to

getting my own copy, I read it all in one evening. It

was so good! I followed the directions in the book and kept on reading it. Next, I put copies of the prayer on

my bathroom mirrors. But praying the Jabez prayer is

the best part! It is from the Bible, so how can you go

wrong? It is a wonderful prayer to include with your

own prayers. I love the part where the author says, "How do you expect God to answer your prayers if you don't ask?" And we all want God's Blessings on us each and every day, so all we have to do is ask. And it really works! So read this little book and learn the secrets!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lead to Learn!, November 2, 2001

The best way to understand any material is to help others learn it. This leader's edition of The Prayer of Jabez Bible Study is an excellent resource to help you do that. Further, the essence of the Jabez prayer is to take on greater spiritual tasks for God, and this little book will help you to do so!

I suggest that you begin by reading The Prayer of Jabez and then the Devotional that supplements it. When you are ready, start praying in the Jabez format on a daily basis. Next, spend four weeks using the Bible Study to guide your further learning, and keep a journal as you do. Then, invite family, friends, and acquaintances to engage in the Bible Study with you as the discussion leader. Keep up with your journal. Then, go through the Bible Study again on your own. From there, let God direct your steps.

One of the benefits of undertaking the Bible Study first on your own is that you will find some minor errors in the Scriptural references. By locating and solving those mistakes in advance, you can help your study group more easily overcome those little hurdles, as well. In that way, you can help amplify God's message!

The Bible Study is organized around four aspects of the Jabez prayer. First, blessings from God are discussed. Second, the focus shifts to having an expanded territory to accomplish His will. Third, you look at the importance of having God's help. Finally, you address avoiding evil and sin.

Each section contains a quiz to help you assess how well prepared you are spiritually to reach out and connect with God's purpose. There are also questions designed to challenge beliefs that may be disconnecting you from God. Many scriptural references from both the Old and New Testaments then give you additional proof of the Jabez prayer's potential. There are also stories about people who have been using the Jabez prayer.

I was especially pleased to see that the Bible Study addressed the discomfort that many Christians feel about having a personal ministry on God's behalf. I felt reaffirmed and encouraged to testify my own beliefs and experienced.

The Bible Study is also very good for connecting to the goodness and beauty of living for God, rather than some other purpose.

After you complete these studies, listen . . . watch . . . and reach out for more of God's messages. You will soon be joyfully enveloped in His love and plans for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Life altering experience, August 21, 2003

This little book was referred to me by a friend. It took about one week before I actually picked it up and began reading it. My life has not been the same. I found myself glued to the book and sharing passages of it with friends. At the time that I purchased the book, it was on sale buy two get one free and I kept one for myself and gave away the others. I recently interviewed with a company and found that the owner was very familiar with the prayer and found myself repeating the prayer with him. I recommend this book to anyone who is in search of a deeper relationship with their creator.
