5.0 out of 5 stars prayer meeting indeed, January 5, 2009
This review is from: Prayer Meeting (Audio CD)
Stanley Turrentine is a wonderful sax player...and together with jimmy smith
and the small band, this album is excellent listening. It is groovy stuff, and not
too busy like some recordings out there. I think Prayer Meeting is my favourite track,
i love the guitar groove and the way turrentine and jimmy smith just play really
groovy stuff...there is no ego, no competition, it is just smooth and silky.

3.0 out of 5 stars Feeling through stereotypes, February 6, 2009
This review is from: Prayer Meeting (Audio CD)
I came onto Smith out of respect for Joey DeFrancesco, some say the master of this organ, which the artist helped innovate from the 50's upward. Somber, soulful, but never static, Prayer Meeting is ideal for fans of early slow jazz, particularly jazz-blues fans with organ priorities, but as classy the record works for first-rate background, there is only so much nuance, by now, in some highly cliche structures.
