5.0 out of 5 stars The possibility of a prayer life is now a possibility for me
I am amazed at the simplicity and practical nature in which this book is written. When I knew it was written in the 1930's, I confess I was pesimistic. I was wrong. Mr. Hallesby communicates clearly and understandably to the 90's. If you are struggling with prayer as I have, please take the time to order and read this book. You will be encouraged, not beaten down...

3.0 out of 5 stars OK
This is definitely an old fashioned view of prayer. Still, now I understand from where and when more modern views on prayer have come. If prayer-life is important to you, you will enjoy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much ignored classic, October 29, 2002
By
This review is from: Prayer (Paperback)
I read this book when I was in high school. Since then I have read many books on prayer, spirituality, and Christian living, but no book I've found has the depth of insight that this one does concerning prayer.

Hallesby takes the reader to the starting line - helplesness and faith; he goes through the race explaining typical pitfalls, and then he describes with beautiful imagery the work of prayer by which we can place ourselves and others in God's healing light to let Him do His work. This is a book to soak up and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars I have been reading this book repeatedly for 6 years, July 9, 2001

I am not fond of re-reading. I have a short attention span and am addicted to the "new." However this book is truly great -- on par with Lewis and Schaffer. Powerful -- and when APPLIED, life transforming.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Foundational Title, January 10, 2004

This review is from: Prayer (Paperback)
I have read this book several times over the years. Each time I find myself a better person. This is certainly one of the foundational books on living the Christian life. The book is easy to read, comforting, challenging, and simplifies an otherwise intimidating aspect of our faith.

Get this book. I'm sure you will enjoy it as much as I.

5.0 out of 5 stars Frustrated in prayer? You need this book!, February 8, 2006
This review is from: Prayer (Paperback)
This book helped me understand prayer. Most important for me are these four lessons. 1) Ask of God with the paradoxical combination of helplessness and absolute confidence. 2) Don't tell God HOW to answer your prayer - be like Mary who said simply "They have no wine." 3) Pray constantly - if you have the time to think a critical thought when passing a stranger on the street, try praying for them instead. 4) Pray as specifically as possible for particular people and situations, as it will attune you to recognize God's answers and to learn gratitude. Whatever your frustrations in prayer, Hallesby addresses them, and this book can help turn prayer into less work, more play. It can help you to more productive prayer, and a more fulfilling Christian life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential primer on prayer, March 19, 2006
This review is from: Prayer (Paperback)
If you do not have this excellent, timeless book on prayer, then your library has a big hole in it. This book is not a quick read in that it inspires meditative reflection--and perhaps, self judgment for prayerlessness. Note what Hallesby says about the necessity in true prayer--faith and helplessness. Fortunately, this book continues to be in wide circulation, so you can get it from Amazon.com for little more than the shipping and handling.

5.0 out of 5 stars PRAYER Changes Makes a Difference - Changes Your Life!, November 5, 2009
This review is from: Prayer (Paperback)
This little book first came to my attention about 42 years ago; as a gift from a university president friend.

Having been a Christian all my life, I wondered what more might I learn about Prayer, from a Norweigan
theologian no less. Was I ever in for a surprise!

O. Hallesby's wrote of his experiences in the early 1930s - in Norweigan - and was translated into English
in the 1950s.

It is deep - powerful - challenging - inspiring. Not a light read; rather a deep, soul searching and revealing
experience. It changed my outlook and prayer life forever. Periodically, I re-read to remind me of what
a great provison GOD has made to address Him directly and personally, in the name of His Son Jesus.

Over the years, I've bought several cases and gift them to friends and acquaintances. Several years ago,
it went out-of-print; I tried to acquire the copyright from Augsburg; however they decided to continue
publishing with an updated cover and added section.

CAUTION: This can and will dramatically change and improve your prayer life.

5.0 out of 5 stars In my top 5 favorite books of all time, April 1, 2006

Clearly and beautifully written, incredibly helpful for Christians persuing their walk. He explains so powerfully the importance of prayer and the essential attitude of prayer, which is depending on God for your every need. From the very starting point of asking Christ into your heart to the prayer life that follows, we only need to ask, and all of the power in the universe is under God's command. Important topic, awesome book.
Hallesby and C.S. Lewis are my favorite Christian authors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best, January 27, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Prayer (Paperback)
This is the best, most helpful, simplest, most profound book I ever read on prayer. I make it a point to read something on prayer daily and have read many, many books on the subject. This one is the best. If you only plan to read one book on prayer, make it this one. If anyone who reads this can recommend one better, I'd love to hear about it.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books On Prayer, December 20, 2011
This review is from: Prayer (Paperback)
I found an old copy of this book in a used book store. Once and awhile I like to read something that is 2-3 generations old because I feel sometimes we get in spiritual ruts in our time and we get group think. This book was very helpful in my own prayer life. It inspired me to see scriptural stories for their prayer themes. It gave me a renewed confidence in continuing always in prayer.

I highly recommend reading this. It is full of spiritual wisdom, and will give you inspiration for your prayer life.
