The book was a tedious whine fest, got tired of hearing god will get you for half the book and the other hslf was mary breaking her arm patting herself on the back. read the book because I saw yje movie, the movie is much better

The story is very powerful. It should be read by everyone, especially those who have gay friends or relatives. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I didn't particularly like the jumping back and forth in time. However, that being said, I would definitely recommend this book.

This book was very nice to read, it explains how ignorance can kill a person. A mother who will never forgive herself for what she did but at least she understood later in her life the huge mistake she did and now she is helping other people like her son.

I loved the story and believe it should be a must read for every parent who has a gay or trans child. As I told my siblings when they ranted at me at supposedly breaking my parent's heart - which would you rather she have, a dead child or a live one (I nearly checked out myself and the only reason I'm here to tell the tale is because I was found)? I believe the story makes the case that a parent would rather have a live one.

If we can get parents to read these stories maybe we can wake them up before standing at a graveside does it.

I grew up in a similar conservative, fundamentalist church family and could closely identify with this family. It breaks my heart to see how certain scriptures are held onto as literal while others are ignored.

How many have come to the realization that they have a child that is different by group standards but in God's eyes they have done no wrong? After the child has taken his or her own life, what then? That sin is in the traditional believes that shaped the behavior not in God's creation. Reading this book we sympathize both for the mother and for the son. Prayers for Bobby, made it clear that we must accept responsibility for our own ignorance. Some traditions cannot be allowed to continue. The Complete Mystery of Matthew Alcott: HERITAGE OF SECRETS by Michael Oborn
