Book Description

July 2008
In a world that feels increasingly fragile, people will continue to look for new prayers and new ways to pray. While there are a number of anthologies of prayer available, no book – until now – has attempted to provide a collection that focuses specifically on prayers for a wide range of modern challenges, from the personal to the global. Prayers for Hope and Comfort covers issues facing individuals (illness, addiction); those challenged in relationships (aging parents, divorce); local communities (natural disasters, unemployment); the larger world (poverty, hunger, war); and creation itself (loss of rainforests, species extinction, global warming). Prayers for Hope and Comfort offers readers solace, comfort, and hope, drawing from the wisdom of every era, every major faith and tradition, and the important voices of those who have lived through such experiences themselves. The book contains selections from some of the world’s most profound poets and thinkers: David Whyte, Eckhart Tolle, Sister Joan Chittister, and Martin Luther King, Jr. as well as traditional prayers and verses from every time and place.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful and blessed book, September 10, 2008
This review is from: Prayers for Hope and Comfort: Reflections, Meditations, and Inspirations (Paperback)
Maggie Oman Shannon has produced yet another beautiful book (I also especially loved her book "A String and a Prayer: How to Make and Use Prayer Beads") that I not only treasure, but plan to send to family and friends for the holidays. Each poem was clearly chosen with the reader in mind, as an act of generosity- a kind of "here, this may offer what you need." My favorite way of using the book is to open it at random and see what treasure I find within. Along with old favorites, I also appreciate being introduced to new authors and have looked many of them up for further reference. I highly recommend this book if you are in need of "hope and comfort" and who isn't these days?

5.0 out of 5 stars A collection of prayers and sage wisdom from a great span of sources, September 3, 2008
This review is from: Prayers for Hope and Comfort: Reflections, Meditations, and Inspirations (Paperback)
Prayer is a universal phenomena and practice which is exclusive to no single religion. "Prayers for Hope and Comfort: Reflections, Meditations, and Inspirations" is a collection of prayers and sage wisdom from a great span of sources. From Martin Luther King Jr. to Confucius, "Prayers for Hope and Comfort" is an impressive and memorable compendium of great religious wisdom in the form of prayers ranging from Christianity to Buddhism. As thoughtful and thought-provoking as it is inspired and inspiring, "Prayers for Hope and Comfort" is very highly recommended addition to personal, community Religious Studies reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

This review is from: Prayers for Hope and Comfort: Reflections, Meditations, and Inspirations (Paperback)
I purchased this book for a young Resident Doctor who took very good care of me. During the course of my treatment we had discussions about prayer and God. I wanted to give her a special gift when our relationship came to a close, so after looking over several possiblities in this category, I ordered two, one for her and one for myself. After receiving the book and reading it, I realized that it not only met but exceeded my expectations. It turned out the be the perfect gift for her and a wonderful addition to my own spiritual library. I truly appreciate how the author took material from all religions. It engenders respect for all of humanity.
