Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

(It is Booklist policy that a book written by a regular contributor receive a brief descriptive announcement rather than a recommending review.)

To each brief sketch of figures ranging from fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-century saints to Renaissance Catholic martyrs to the nineteenth-century victims of the Highland clearances and the Irish famine to such modern writers as Flannery O'Connor and Seamus Heaney, Sawyers appends some points for spiritual reflection and short lists of sites associated with the figure and further readings. Most Helpful Customer Reviews

Format: Paperback
This is a fun and informative book which provides a wonderful introduction to many Celtic saints, scholars and poets. There are 52 portraits of key Celtic figures who have made significant contributions to Celtic spirituality and Christianity. Sawyers introduction is a great birds eye view of the features of Celtic Christianity and then follows vivid snapshots of key Celtic figures. The book has some surprises and also includes modern saints such as John O'Donohue, George Macleod, William Butler Yeats and others.

Sections can be read daily. Many sections include reflections, sites associated with the saint, and a bibliography. A perfect book to take whilst visiting Ireland!

The title led me to believe it is a book of prayers, which I was really looking forward to.
Was hugely disappointed to find its just summaries of lives of the saints and others.
