Book Description

Companions for the Journey June 1992
As the first saint to grow from the soil of the United States, Elizabeth Seton holds a special place in the story of the Catholic Church in America. A wife and widow, mother of five children, founder of a new community of religious women, teacher and administrator, Elizabeth Seton was remarkable by any standard. Most importantly, Elizabeth Seton was a holy person who companioned other people to a greater love of God and of their sisters and brothers.

Contains fifteen meditations: God's Word in the Heart. - Acting on God's Word. - Commitment in Faith. - God's Love For Us. - Prayer Without Ceasing. - Christ's Presence in the Eucharist. - Not My Will But Yours. - Following the Demands of Love. - Loving Service. - Forgiving and Unselfish Love. - Friendship. - Mary, Mother. - Parenting. - Children of the Church. - Hope in the Resurrection.

The spiritual depth of a remarkable woman shines through this book. In its pages, Elizabeth becomes a warm and wise soul-friend. If you ever struggle to pray through life's hurts, if you meet God in the Scriptures, in the Eucharist, in Nature, in Friendship, you will find Mother Seton a kindred spirit. .

5.0 out of 5 stars I just LOVE this series of "Praying With..." books!, October 6, 2008

(REAL NAME)
I just LOVE this series of "Praying With..." books. Each title has the same format of an introduction to the life of the saint, followed by 15 chapter/meditations. Each meditation could take 15 minutes to 1 hour, depending on how much time you'd like to commit.

Each mediation/chapter has the same format:

Theme. One or two sentence summary of the theme, such as "Prayer without Ceasing" (Mediation #5).

Opening prayer. Short. "Teach me, O God, such constancy in prayer that it fosters an unending dialog with you." (#5)

About Elizabeth. Several paragraphs, maybe a page, about the saint on topic with the theme.

Saint's Words. Several paragraphs, quotes from writings of the saint related to the theme.

Reflection. This part may be another page or more and is the "active" part of the mediation. The reader is asked to reflect on what has been read thus far and then "do something" with the material. Many options are given here including guided meditation, Lectio Divina (divine studying), repeated short prayer, journal writing, examination of consciousness, or some action, such as singing a favorite hymn or going for a walk. Something for everyone!

God's Word. A bible quote or two related to the theme.

Closing prayer. A sentence or two. "May I always be joyful and pray constantly. Thank you, gracious God, for the closeness of your spirit and for urging my heart to fervent, unending prayer." (#5).

This book is perfect to take along on a Holy Hour!
