3.0 out of 5 stars The Lord's Prayer in Everyday Practical Application, November 5, 2008
This review is from: Praying as Jesus Taught Us: Meditations on the Our Father (Paperback)
I would recommend this book to anybody who is eager to enhance their practical application of Bible study.
The book is so simple and anybody can read it and make very good use of it. Cardinal Martini offers practical steps and concludes each chapter with questions for further reflection. The books is very good but not stunning as I have hoped, to tell the truth. Yet we definitely need this kind of books for regular Bible study from time to time. Cardinal Martini aims to show that the Our Father prayer is the synthesis of Jesus' whole life and the key to understanding him. Well, if there is such a key in our hands to Jesus' whole life, the more books on the Our Father the better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Marvelous Meditation, May 2, 2008

This review is from: Praying as Jesus Taught Us: Meditations on the Our Father (Paperback)
"Praying as Jesus taught us" is an excellent book of reflections that can improve our spiritual life. The book is written in five sections: Our Father; Deliver us from evil; Give us bread - Forgive trespasses; Thy will be done; and Thy Kingdom come. The original material was presented by Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini on radio in the Archdiocese of Milan during Lent of 1999. The Cardinal created the meditations for the for the people of his Archdiocese.

Martini asks us to go on a spiritual pilgrimage, traveling and pondering parts of the famous prayer that Jesus gave us. On this pilgrimage we will consider the human evils of hunger, disease, loneliness and suffering. The prayer Jesus gave us appears simple, but when taken within the context Jesus gave it, the prayer can be very profound. This prayer can call us to compassion and allow us to view the very heart of Jesus.

Cardinal Martini reminds us that Jesus addressed God as father.
Father in Aramaic language is "Abba", what young children would call their paternal parent. Abba is a name that communicates affection, love, tenderness. The father Jesus addresses is not a remote, distant parent, but one that knows you and cares about you.

The meditations in this book are edifying and insightful. I highly recommend this book.
