"Praying the Names of God is a reader-friendly guidebook to the character of God as he reveals himself through his names."
-- Ruth Graham --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

From the Back Cover

A twenty-six-week devotional study by the bestselling coauthor of Women of the Bible Names in the ancient world did more than simply distinguish one person from another, they often conveyed the essential nature and character of a person. This is especially true when it comes to the names of God recorded in the Bible. Praying the Names of God explores the primary names and titles of God in the Old Testament to reveal the deeper meanings behind them. El Shadday, Elohim, Adonay, Abba, El Elyon---God Almighty, Mighty Creator, Lord, Father, God Most High---these are just a few of the names and titles of God that yield rich insights into his nature and character. Praying the Names of God shows readers how to study and pray God's names by focusing each week on one of the primary names or titles of God. * Monday---readers study a portion of Scripture that reveals the name. * Tuesday--Thursday---readers pray specific Scripture passages related to the name. * Friday---readers pray Scripture promises connected to the name. By incorporating the divine names and titles into their prayers---and learning about the biblical context in which the name was revealed---readers will gain a more intimate understanding of who God is and how he can be relied on in every circumstance of their lives. Praying the Names of God is a unique devotional, one that offers a rich program of daily prayer and study designed to lead people into fresh encounters with the living God. The book is also available as an Abridged Audio Pages CD.

More About the Author

Ann Spangler is an award-winning author, publishing her first book, an instant bestseller, in 1994. Since then, she has gone on to write several bestselling books, including Women of the Bible (co-authored with Jean Syswerda), Praying the Names of God, Praying the Names of Jesus, and Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus (co-authored with Lois Tverberg). Her latest book is Praying the Attributes of God. Together her books have sold millions of copies.

In 2013 she was named the Logos Bookstore Author of the Year, an award given to an author "whose body of works exemplifies the power of books to change lives forever."

By paying attention to the spiritual and emotional hungers that animate us and by finding creative ways to explore God's self-revelation in Scripture, her writing surprises by revealing a God who is often far bigger and better than we might imagine.

In addition to writing, Ann has enjoyed a lengthy career in Christian publishing, working for William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, Servant Publications, and Zondervan Publishing in marketing, editorial, and management roles. Her broad experience in publishing has convinced her that readers are looking for well-written books that explore the connection between spiritual experience and everyday life, books that both engage the mind and strengthen the heart.

There are many devotionals on the market. My favorite is Utmost for His Highest. This one is different but as rewarding and well worth the read. Ann Spangler gets personal with His Highest: El Shadday, Elohim, Adonay in a memorable way. In one chapter the lesson is about Elohim [e-lo-HEEM]- God's name as creator. Here Ms. Spangler gives a scriptural accounting of the creative aspect of God. Each successive week is devoted to then another one of God's names (i.e. Elam: a name apprearing over 400 times which translates as "eternal," "everlasting," "forever."). Each week is broken into 5 short daily lessons to help you meditate on the particular understanding of God. In this regard, you begin to ask yourself the question, "how do we respond when people take the initiative to call us by our name?" I think Ms. Spangler has written a very special book that invites everyone to get to know their God not a little, but a lot better - that is, on a first name basis.

Every once in a while a book comes along with a deceptively simple title that gives no hint of the much deeper and inspirational thoughts inside. This is one of those books. Throughout the Old Testament God is referred to by various names. Each one represents a specific attribute of God that is particularly relevant to those circumstances. Taken together these names reveal the nature of God and point to ways to see and seek Him as well as understand our relationship with Him. This book is insightful, encouraging, and inspirational while at the same time moving your prayer life up to another level.

Full of Bible references, Praying the Names of God is highly recommended and sure to bring a deeper understanding of God to the reader. The only thing about the book that some may find troublesome is the lack of capitalization on all personal pronouns related to God. While God, Lord, and other references are capitalized, Him, His, and He are not. Some more conservative readers may have a problem with this. My advice to them is to not let something like this cause them to miss a very good book.

I absolutely love this book, however, when I got to page 289, I found that 2 chapters of The Purpose Driven Life had been inserted into the book - omitting the same number of pages from Praying the Names. It cuts off on Thursday, and doesn't pick up until 1 chapter later - on Monday. 15 pages total are missing.

When you receive your copy, check those pages first and return it for a correct version.

My wife and I had already experienced this book through our local library, which limited us to a two-week loan period which, we soon found, was not nearly enough. We had decided to utilise this work in our fortnightly home bible study group meetings this year. We purchased four copies of the standard print version locally for the use of our members, but the large print was not available here in Australia, so Amazon came to the rescue admirably. We cannot praise the book more highly. Ann Spangler has grasped her subject with a sure knowledge of the love of God and His Grace. We also have her "Praying the Names of Jesus" but have not yet managed to delve into it deeply. We look forward to it. "Praying The Names of God" has our highest recommendation for anyone searching for a fuller meaning in their Christian lives when dedicating their lives to God's love and care.

Most believers won't study Hebrew or intense theology of the Old Testament. While this book cannot replace that type of formal education, it is a glimpse into the original language of our scriptures. So, it's valuable for us to read, and a gift to understand.

In a beautifully written devotional, Ann Spangler defines the different names used to reference God throughout scripture. Understanding these names & descriptions cannot help but enrich our personal study of scripture, our prayers, and application in our daily lives. While primarily intended as a guide for daily prayer, this book is also a nice reference - and supplement - to scripture studies. In understanding each name, we receive a better (perhaps new) view of our God.

I appreciated the chance to learn titles that have been used to address and refer to God throughout history. I think you will find, like I have, that a new perspective of the One we worship can transform our own prayer, understanding, and outlook.
