Praise for Praying for Your Future Husband

“This book is a must-read for every girl who has even wondered what her future husband will be like. Every page left me wishing I’d had this book when I was still single—or during all the years I mentored boy-crazy teenage girls. Whether you are looking for inspiration, encouragement, or even proof that prayer works, this book is for you. The perfect blend of real-life stories and a how-to manual, Praying for Your Future Husband will be an ideal companion from now until the altar.”
—Shannon Primicerio, author of The Divine Dance, God Called a Girl, and the TrueLife Bible Studies series

“When I was twelve years old, my husband began praying for me. I did not know that, of course, because I did not yet know him or God. But later, looking back, I saw how those prayers had miraculously affected my life. Gunn and Goyer are practical, vulnerable, inspirational, and encouraging. I can think of few better gifts for a young lady to offer her future husband than the gift of her prayers, and this book shows how to do it.”
—Sandra Byrd, best-selling author of the London Confidential series and other books for teens and tweens

Praying for Your Future Husband is packed with wisdom and overflowing with practical insight to encourage the heart of every young woman seeking God’s best. The perfect blending of Robin’s and Tricia’s unique and personal journeys to find their mates, it is filled with wisdom and sound advice from Scripture to spur on your prayer life as you follow your own path. This is a must-read for every young woman who desires a road map on the journey of discovering God’s heart!”
—Pam Stenzel, MA, author of Nobody Told Me and Sex Has a Price Tag and director of Enlighten Communications

“Are you tired of waiting for the right man and convinced that all the good guys are already taken? Want to find the man who will love you and cherish you, having been prepared by the Lord himself ? This book is where you begin. Robin and Tricia have taken all the pieces of the “finding true love” puzzle and have assembled a clear picture and a path that make sense and tell the truth about God and His plans for you. Stop worrying, and dive right in. This book shows you each step of the way to a future that God has planned for you and your future husband!”
—Amanda Bennett, author of more than ninety books

Every time I drive Grammy home, she asks me the same question, "Have you met a boy yet?" Each time I answer, "No,Grammy." Then she replies, "Have you prayed about it?" My response is, "Put it on your prayer list." Although her intentions are sweet, it still weighs on my heart. I'm thirty-one and single. I wasted six years dating the wrong guy and another two getting over him, and I gave up hope that God has a man for me. Because I lost hope, I quit praying for him like I used to do when I was in high school or college. If I prayed back then without receiving an answer, why should now be any different?
When I requested the book Praying for your Future Husband to review, I expected the book to be geared towards high school or even college-age girls. I thought it would be an interesting read that I could give to a teen girl at church. I wasn't expecting to have my hope restored.
Each chapter of the book discusses a specific prayer. In the chapter, both Robin and Tricia share their vastly different stories, scriptures, and anecdotes from women across the country. At the end of the chapter, there are questions and space to answer. What is intriguing is that there is also a prayer for the single woman. Women often make lists of what they want in a husband (I did back in high school--God lover being the number one trait.), but we sometimes forget to pray for God to make us into a woman after His own heart, a woman who is prepared to be a wife.
This book is unique in that Robin and Tricia have different stories to share. Robin began praying for her husband and writing letters to him at a young age. Tricia was a teen mom.

I have been excited about this book's release for a long time, and I was definitely not disappointed.

Praying for Your Future Husband is not necessarily a how-to guide on prayer. There is a presupposition that those who read this book already know that prayer is important. However, the authors also make sure to present the truth early on that a personal relationship with Christ is essential.

Each chapter begins with thoughts from Robin, including her own story. Then it flows on to Tricia's story and thoughts. Woven into each chapter are Scripture passages, verses from Bible paraphrases, quotes from prominent Christian authors, and the stories of other young women who have prayed or are praying for their future husbands. Each chapter ends with two sample prayers, one for the reader and one for her future husband, followed by a series of thought-provoking questions.

I had a complaint about the book that actually fell apart as I came to the end. While reading, I was disappointed as I saw that the authors did not include Scriptures with the prayers in each chapter. But, as I was drawing close to the end of the book, I discovered an appendix with fifty-two Scriptures to pray - one for each week of the year. My complaint turned into delight as I saw that this organization was even better for consistent, systematic prayer focus.

I cannot express how excited I am about this book as a tool for encouraging single women of all ages as they wait for the future God has in store for them. For some, it will be marriage. For others, it will not. But for all, prayer is essential. I began recommending Praying for Your Future Husband before I even finished it, and I hope to soon be walking through it with some young women at church.

I received this book through WaterBrook Multnomah's Blogging for Books program in exchange for my honest review. (Note: a favorable review was not required for participation.)

I grew up on Robin Jones Gunn's "Christy Miller" series, and later read her "Sierra Jensen" series. I dreamed of having the same adventures as Christy Miller, and of one day finding my own Todd (Christy's wonderful Christian boyfriend). I always admired the way Robin uplifted the character qualities of godliness, patience, and steadfastness throughout her books.

Reading Praying for Your Future Husband brought the themes in Robin's books full circle for me. Robin writes about her own love story. Co-author Tricia Goyer writes about her own as well. Both women prayed for their future husbands before meeting them, and both loved and lost several boyfriends. I found myself relating to both women's stories. Robin related how her fiance broke up with her 6 months into their engagement - her wedding dress in the closet, church paid for, invitations about to go out. I too had this happen to me. I could relate to her depression, bitterness, and distrust in the months following her broken engagement. I had been there. I could also relate to Tricia's stories of wanting to be accepted and loved by someone.

This book is not a manual for how to get a husband. It is not a guide for how to pray in the right way so God will "finally" hear your prayers. I feel the subtitle of the book says it all: "Preparing Your Heart for His." Not just the heart of your future husband, but the heart of Christ. Robin and Tricia talk about how praying for another person not only affects the person being prayed for, but the person praying. For when you pray for the qualities of patience, steadfastness, and godliness in your future mate, you realize how much you also need those traits. Praying also brings you closer to God's heart - the most important trait to have, whether you get married or not.
