eneloop OLD batteries!
on July 22, 2013
NOTE: I originally wrote this in July. It's quite possible that, by now, Amazon IS shipping 3rd gen Eneloop batteries. I just wanted to make it clear that this review MIGHT (or may NOT) be out of date! I simply don't know for sure.
1 star because, twice now, I've received these batteries from Amazon, and both times they sent me different batteries from what was advertised!
Amazon claims that these are the NEW eneloop batteries. I've even seen some reviews confirming that these are the 2nd generation eneloop batteries. The thing is, the 2nd generation eneloops are the OLD batteries. The "NEW" eneloop batteries are the THIRD generation batteries.
eneloop makes it as easy as possible to tell exactly which batteries you're buying, because their model numbers contain all the information you need! The model numbers of their standard batteries use the following format:
where "#" tells you the type of battery:
# = 3, AA batteries; # = 4, AAA batteries
and "X" tells you the generation:
X = blank, 1st generation; X = A, 2nd generation; X = B, 3rd generation
eneloop's blister packs simply add the number of batteries in the pack, followed by "BP", to the model.
So, a 16 pack of eneloop NEW AAA batteries is:
Easy, right?!? EXCEPT, Amazon has REMOVED the generation indicator from the model numbers!!!
The 8 AA pack in this listing is model number "SEC-HR3U8BPN". Sure, there are extra letters at the beginning and end, and the dashes are different. What matters to me is that the "TG/TGA/TGB" section is missing!
And so they label these as "NEW" batteries, but send you the old ones!
To make matters worse, don't think that asking Customer Service will help! When I sent back the first set, I wrote to them, specifying that, if they were just going to replace them with the same batteries, DON'T! Well, that didn't work so well.
To be clear, eneloop makes fine batteries, including their 2nd generation! That's not why I gave these 1 star. Had Amazon listed these as eneloop 2nd gen batteries, I would have rated them four or five stars. But they didn't! They listed these as something they're not, and THAT deserves a rating of ONE STAR!
