I use this to cover the intake of my AquaClear 30. Does everything it's supposed to - no surprises and no disappointments. It's nice that the hole doesn't go all the way through the sponge. Now my frogs can hang out on top of it all they want without any danger of getting their feet sucked up. :)

This 3-pack in conjunction with Amazon Prime makes this the best deal for this sponge on the market.

This is fine. It's a cylindrical sponge with a hole on one side, but it isn't a Fluval. The most important difference is that the Fluvals have a hole large enough to fit on almost any HOB filter intake. This sponge's hole is about half the diameter. You have to either take out the intake tube and use two hands to really push it in, or you'll have to do what I did: take a hobby knife and cut lengthwise inside the hole in order to enlarge the opening.

It's still good for the price, but this is not a Fluval in name or design (it doesn't even come in Fluval packaging), and you'll have to do some work to get it to perform its function properly.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of five was the fact that it is realy realy small. I expected it to be bigger, well much bigger (taller and a bit wider). I bought it because my neighbor gave me a prefilter sponge that is two and a half times the height and a bit wider and fits well on even my small HOB filters with 1 inch lift tubes. I thought it would be the same size but it was tiny. Luckily I found that it fits well on my smaller HOB filters with 1 inch or less lift tubes - so i decided to upgrade all my smaller HOB filters and buy the three pack (I accidentally bought the 1 pack for $3.49!). It is a good deal for three of these knowing one of them on amazon sells for 3.49-as the three pack is only 3.99 (50 cents for two extra!). Great product for upgrading your smaller HOB filters! Just make sure you rinse them out when you do water changes as they have a tendancy to get gunked up and impede the flow of your fitler.

*UPDATE - I have been using these pre filters for about three years now and they really do work well. Place one on the intake tube
of your canister or hob filter and you will find that you have to clean the filter far less frequently. Just remove the Fluval pre filter once a week and run it under tap water to clean it. Then reinstall. You will be amazed at how much detritus these pre filters collect
before it can ever get to the filter media in your HOB or canister filter.

Over time they will wear out and need to be replaced. However, they are so inexpensive that it's really not an issue.

Caveat: In a tank that is plagued by algae problems, the algae will grow on these pre filters and eventually render them useless.
This is especially true of black beard algae which attaches itself to these filters with a vengeance. The water will pass through
the algae attached to the pre filter and carry its spores back into your aquarium.

Most algae problems are easily remedied with the use of a micron filter which removes spores before they can grow.

Using a UV sterilizer also helps tremendously in keeping algal growth to a minimum.

I use the Fluval Edge prefilters on the intake tubes of 3 Aquaclear 20 filters in 5.5 gallon aquariums, which I use as part of a sectional aquarium setup for raising fancy guppies.

I also have a 10 gallon tank as part of my guppy sectional setup, with an Eheim 2213 canister filter, which I have also added one of these prefilters to.

The Eheim's intake strainer is small enough to slip the Fluval prefilter on, and the Aquaclear 20 is the same filter used by Fluval with its Edge 6 and 12 gallon tanks, so the fit is perfect.

I use these prefilters for two reasons.

Even though these are manufactured by Fluval, they work on filters that are not made by Fluval. I have used one of these as a pre-filter on an Aqueon QuietFlow 10, and I now use one on a Cascade 150 in a tank with some fish and one shrimp.

The tank where I have this installed is a planted tank, and often a piece of Java Fern or moss will decide to float around the tank. This filter helps keep the plant matter from being sucked into the filter intake, and it also protects my shrimp from being harmed by the filter. She likes to hang on the intake and eat the particles of food that get trapped in the sponge. It allows just enough flow to interest the shrimp while reducing the flow somewhat to the benefit of my Gouramis.

Because of this pre-filter, I only have to change the filter cartridge about once a month. The $3.99 I spent on three of these filters paid for itself within the first month of use. This does not even take into account the boost to biological filtration this sponge filter provides in my tank. This might be the best $3.99 I have ever spent.

Note: These pre-filter sponges will work for brands that are not Fluval, but only smaller models designed for 5 to 10-gallon tanks. The intakes on larger filters are too large for these sponges to fit. Furthermore, they will not fit the Marineland filters at all; the intakes on Marineland filters are too large.
