Purity,
By Janitor X (The Mountains) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pre-School (Audio CD)
Anybody who believes teenagers are not capable of making great rock music don't know what rock music is all about. For teenagers, everyday experiences are still new and exciting. Emotions are much stronger than that of an adult and their excitement and enthusiasm cannot be matched by any other age group either. The fact is, no matter how much the majority of people deny it, each day you wake up is a step closer to death. Your body and mind are beginning to fade away into nothingness this minute. Without the high levels of excitement and emotion, rock music is useless.
At the time these tracks were recorded the members of Gang Green were sixteen years old. Inside the compilation CD of "This Is Boston, Not L.A./ Unsafe at Any Speed" (which most songs on this album appear) there's a good story about the problems presented by Gang Green's recording session and how they could mix it so it would be listenable. The first two songs on this CD are not on the aforementioned album and also happen to be the two best Gang Green songs, so even if you own that CD you must own this as well. Much like other rule breaking hardcore bands, Gang Green went against the dominate straight edge mentality of the Boston scene and consumed as much drugs and alcohol as possible, which eventually took its toll on the bands later recordings. "Preschool" is absolutely essential hardcore. Like many hardcore albums, their first effort is their best. It's purity of essence. Rebellious, reckless, angry, and exciting is what rock music should be like and this is a fine example of that.

Don't be turned off by their later bar rock albums!,

An unstoppable beginning from these youngsters, "Preschool" covers Gang Green's tracks on the infamous "This Is Boston not LA" comp as well as their 7" "Sold Out," which was recorded around the same time but released in 84. It's some of the fastest and angriest hardcore available from the time (1980) and all from a group of voice cracking 15 year olds. That together with a comprehensive booklet of anecdotes and information make this an excellent release. I give it 4 stars only because, for less than 11 minutes of music, [the price] is a bit expensive. Be aware, however, that you will probably never find any of the original recordings for under 3 digits, so I suppose it's a tradeoff.

one of the greatest punk albums of all time,

This cd is the greatest thing to ever happen to music. All of the songs on this cd are awesome. I think the best part about Gang Green is the singer, who is almost as good as HR (singer of Bad Brains). Buy this cd if you like bands like Middle Class, Minor Threat, JFA, and Void. I've had this cd for a few month's now and I've probably listened to it 30 times. So, yeah, buy this if you like those bands I listed above!

The Best There Is To Offer,
This review is from: Pre-School (Audio CD)
Believe it or not, this band used to be REAL good and here is the proof. This should be ranked up in the same category as Group Sex by The Circle Jerks and Pick Your King by Poison Idea. Viva 1982.

Too short? Flip it over!,
This review is from: Pre-School (Audio CD)
Make the most of your time, this is easily the shortest album I own. Granted, their early material is _______ rare, so this is probally your best bet I can imagine listeing to this more than once, it's the ultimate flip over album. At only 11 minutes, it's ALL killer no filler. So the length shouln't be a problem, just listen to it again.
The reason why? Because this album rules! This is hardcore punk, and this record usually goes unnoticed beacuse of the easier to get other excellent hardcore albums, such as the Misfits, Minor Threat, and Black Flag. But this is for anybody who craves hardcore punk, plain and simple. It's fast, angry, with a ____load of energy. Yet it sounds unique enough to stand out. And they were only 16 when they made this cd. Later material is mostly bar rock, but I can't comment on those albums. All hardcore punk fans, get this album. 9.5/10
