I was in my local Walmart Friday (10/12) when the ad first appeared in my paper and they told me to come back Sunday (10/14.) I did and got one put on layaway. My local Walmart will be opening layaway at midnight on the seventeeth/eighteenth for those of us with it on layaway to pick up and they'll reportedly have a large selection of games/accessories also there for purchase. My plan right now is to pick it up at midnight, bring it home, remove the gamepad and charger, and plug in the gamepad to fully charge it, then go to bed. Then when I wake up later in the morning, I'll hook everything up and start playing.

The gamepad will reportedly take 2 1/2 hours to fully charge, so rather than sit there and stare at it (or play with the cord connected) I'll sneak in some sleep. When I wake up the gamepad should be ready to go. If Nintendo has a firmware update ready at rollout (and that's likely) I may connect the console when I get back and let it download and install that too. Connecting it looks pretty simple, a single HDMI cable, a power cable, and the sensor bar. Connecting it to my wifi shouldn't take long. Installing a firmware update and charging the gamepad overnight should let me have fun exploring things the next morning without undue delays.

when me and my brother put on layway at walmart they told use we have to pay it off and pick it up by november 17 or we will forefit our reserve and not be able to get one. I know this because i asked and the manager clear told us this when we asked the layway specialist.

That is simply not true. They can't allow you pick it up by Nov 17 because Nintendo has strictly forbidden anyone selling it before the 18th. This manager better check his info or he himself could be in deep trouble.

You have until December 14-15 to pay it off. Its a regular layaway, I don't see how they can make you have it paid by date it comes in. Who knows every walmart is different.

Putting one on layaway is starting to look like it was a really good idea. Satoru Iwata when speaking with investors predicted a shortage of consoles for the coming season and said they were now anticipating sales of 5.5 million units by March, down from the 10+ million they'd been earlier anticipating. He said that the decline would be due to their inability to manufacture consoles quickly enough and that demand would outpace supply. The bad news is this means the resellers will make money, and possibly lots of money. He also confirms that manufacturing started this past summer. I'm glad I've got mine on layaway.

Here's the article for anyone interested.

Oops i meant the 18 and yeah thats how the nintendo wii u deal works here at my local walmart must be payed off and picked up by the 18 and also i was told that its not a regular layway because the item wasnt available yet. Also they are taking all pre orders but it made me wonder if they are taking all pre orders how many wii u's will they have on launch day? Bestbuy, Gamestop, Toys R Us are sold out so does that mean first come first served at walmart and if you dont get one you have to wait? so confused

Cody. I can't say for sure about your Walmart store, but in my store they were only accepting a limited number of layaways. There were a certain number available in their system and when they reached that number the layaways stopped. You should have gotten a long printed out receipt when you completed the process that gives you all of the terms and details including the fact that you have until December 14th to pick up the product. It's a long, long receipt with all of the conditions and details thoroughly explained. That receipt matters more than what anyone told you. That receipt is your binding contract with Walmart, not something someone there told you.

As to the number of consoles that will be shipped to each retailer, with the original Wii, Toys R Us was a preferred vendor and got more consoles than other retailers. I'm thinking Walmart may be the preferred vendor this time around. I haven't heard anything specific about this, but Walmart sells more of everything than just about anyone else, so I wouldn't be shocked to see Nintendo and them work out a deal so the majority of consoles go to Walmart. That could explain why Walmart has more pre-orders available.

Paper Tiger says: has the Deluxe bundle for sale.Check the site frequently if you want an online pre-order! Sometimes it's sold out and then they will have more in stock a day later! We have 3 pre-ordered between my family and the extended family(not to re-sell)! the only bad thing is the shipping isn't free.

I wish that Amazon would provide for us, but at this point I think that is most people's best bet. I live in a fairly remote place, (one and a half hours from any big retail store), so I check all the online pre-order websites often. seems to have pre-orders open often, but it is very random. Sometimes I'll check it at 6:00PM and it reads "out of stock". But then one hour later, at 7:00PM, it is open for pre-orders. My best advice is check it often, and your bound to get lucky. is also not a bad deal. They make you buy it in a special Walmart bundle, but it includes items that most people would buy on the original purchase anyways.- An additional game and your choice of the new Pro Controller or an Extra Wii Remote. Best of luck to all the buyers that are still looking. My hope is that no one will have to resort to buying from the sellers listed here on Amazon:}

I was lucky enough to have seen the Wal-Mart ad on facebook letting the public know that you could preorder it on layaway and pick it up on launch day. I was getting very discouraged because it seemed to be sold out everywhere. However, putting it on layaway was quite a task. First, I sent my sister to do it for me because I was working at the time (this was on October 20th by the way) and the layaway people had no clue what the Wii U was and that I couldn't put it on layaway because they didn't have the product in stock. So I show up later that night and it's the same story. I get into a heated argument with one of the electronics associates and they finally say they'll take down my number and call me when they get their shit straight. However, it could take forever to get their shit straight so I call the next day and the layaway lady is like of course you can put the Wii U on layaway. WTF? Thanks for the heads up Wal-Mart. So I rush down there and am able to put it on layaway with no problems whatsoever. I was the 5th person to reserve it in that particular store. I'm just glad that I was able to solidify a Wii U system on launch day and got it at MSRP. Now its just a matter of getting a new tv to go along with it.

Its seems like Walmart did not inform their sales associates who work layaway what was going on, about taking preorders for layaway.

It wasn't the best organized layaway procedure, but it eventually worked for me and that's what I cared about. The initial paperwork sent out by Walmart didn't work (wrong UPC code) so that put the clerks in a bad spot. They'd try to follow the procedure outlined in the printout only to find it didn't work. I was lucky an assistant manager got involved very early with my layaway and he worked with the clerk to get it resolved. (Hopefully anyway. I'll find out on the eighteenth for sure.)

Donald your are right, when I went to put my Wii U on The clerk could not get the UPC code to work and an assistant also had to jump in and tell her what code to use.

I went to my local Walmart to try and put the Wii U on layaway but the employee told me I had to go online and fill out a form and then come back to the store to put it on layaway. I could find no such form on their site. I think you only had until like between Oct. 14th to Nov. 1st to put it on layaway. I'm just hoping I can get in line on Saturday night and get one at 12:01am Sunday. I mean I swear if people start camping out like Friday or even Saturday morning I am probably screwed.

Actually, the lack of promotion Nintendo has done may be an advantage for those who want a Wii U and didn't get a preorder/lay-away in. There's a reasonable chance you'll be able to get one on the eighteenth unless Nintendo really ramps things up this week. The resellers will likely be there to snatch up any units they can get, but the general public barely knows the Wii U exists, so I don't think there will be a lot of competition.

My local Walmart typically closes at midnight, but I'm hoping they stay open for the 12:01 release of the Wii U's so I can get mine, get it home, get the gamepad charging and get the console connected to download the updated firmware overnight and then have everything ready to go Sunday morning. I'm going to pay off most of the rest of what I owe on the Wii U Saturday morning and check to see if they will be open at midnight.

I also did a layaway with Walmart and my first time going in, they told me the same thing is that I can't do a layaway on the Wii U and I even spoke to the manager and he didn't know what i was talking about! This was in the morning as well when I guess 3rd shift is working so maybe they weren't informed that is was in the ad. Well any ways, I went back during my lunch hour and I was able to do it. I will have the system paid off when I pick it up on the 18th and plus I'll get a 3 year warranty for $40 so that's not too bad. I just get worried that I will get screwed over because I never did layaway and even though each Walmart has limited quantities, I hope that I am guaranteed for one.
