This review is from: Preaching God's Word: A Hands-On Approach to Preparing, Developing, and Delivering the Sermon (Hardcover)
I read this book for a Homiletics class which was taught by Dr. Carter. This book is a well written book and is a must have for anyone interested in becoming an effective communicator. There are practical steps to interpreting God's Word correctly and how to deal with the different biblical genres, how to find illustrations for your sermons, how to communicate to different types of audiences, making the Bible relevant to your audience, different sermon delivery styles, and much more. Anyone who gives talks to any audience (children, youth, or adults) will want to get this book. It will make a massive difference in not only your handling of the Bible, but also the delivery of the Word to your audience.

Great book, very informative. I needed it for school but really have enjoyed reading it.

I was really excited to get this book after reading the previous review and also reading reviews of Grasping God's Word by the same authors. Grasping God's word is a pretty decent book on hermeneutics, but this book was a major disappointment. It is basically a simplified version of Haddon Robinson's classic work, Biblical Preaching. The book is way too simple for a seminary level book. A good beginner's book for those who have never preached, or taken a course, but not recommended for those wanting to really improve.
Their whole principled approach to Scripture is a little bit strange. Anyway, the sermons look just like any other using Haddon's approach. If you really want a fresh new book on preaching, get Andy Stanley's Communicating for a Change. You'll begin to communicate, and not just preach! Read this book at a good library, and then see if you really want to buy it. If you have to buy it for a class, get it used. Ten step method presented in the book: 1 - Grasp the meaning of the text in their town 2 - Measure the Width of the Interpretive River 3 - Cross the Principlizing Bridge 4 - Grasp the Text in Our Town 5 - Exegete Your Congregation 6 - Determine How much Background material to Include 7 - Determine the Sermon Thesis and Main Points 8 - Develop Text-Centered Applications 9 - Find Illustrations 10 - Write Out the Sermon and Practice Delivery

This book gives a straight forward and simple to understand guide for sermon writing. I highly recommend Grasping God's word as a companion text.
