Book Description

October 11, 1998
With inspiring insight, one of America's foremost Catholic theologians explains why we must apply biblical justice--not merely ethical or legal justice--to matters concerning the poor, the oppressed, and the marginalized. Pointing to the Christian tradition of profound social teaching, Father Walter Burghardt offers advice to other preachers about the ways to address today's most controversial social justice issues.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Burghardt's work is an expanded version of the 1994 Lyman Beecher Lectures on Preaching, which Burghardt originally delivered at the Yale Divinity School. As he explains in his preface, the lectures were shaped by an intersection of autobiography with history. He attributes their general subject--the Christian pulpit and the just word--to "recent preoccupations," but his passion for the preaching of justice is hardly a recent development. The lectureship has been identified from its inception with prominent preachers, many of whom have also been noted as theorists of preaching; Burghardt continues that tradition. The book is a mixture of homiletic theory and practice, as valuable for the window it provides on Burghardt's theological and pastoral development as for the particular positions it develops. It is also important for the insight it provides into the twentieth-century transformation of the Roman Catholic Church--a glimpse through the eyes of a generally progressive theologian and pastor shaped by a generally conservative institution. Steve Schroeder --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This review is from: Preaching the Just Word (Paperback)
This is truly an outstanding offering by one of the pinnacle preachers of the 20th century! On target about justice and what the bible says and Jesus preaches about justice. A must have for preachers concerned with justice in life and in today's "care less, I've got mine-get your own" world.

First Sentence:
Several years ago, the creative Scripture scholar Walter Brueggemann addressed what he called the problem of "scandal" in the preaching of social, political, and economic issues: In Luke 7, after John the Baptist raises his christological question through his disciples whether Jesus is the Christ, and after Jesus answers with specificity that "the blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the dead are raised, and the poor rejoice," Jesus adds, "blessed is the one who is not scandalized by me" (v. 23). Read the first page
