Thirty-one leading architects are represented in this updated Third Edition in examinations of more than 100 structures assessed through a diagrammatic technique that is applicable to any structure. This impressive collection includes sixteen new buildings and eight innovative architects distinguished by the strength, quality, and interest of their designs. Readers will find valuable guidance in analyzing architectural history as an evolutionary process by exploring the commonality of design ideas reflected in a broad range of structures by internationally renowned architects.

I am an architecture student, and I do not know why this book was not a required textbook for our studio courses. It is very hard to find published diagrams of well-known buildings, but here they are laid out in a great format ideal for comparison. Every architect and architecture student should have this book in their library. I expect it to become a valuable reference tool and source of design inspiration.

I am an interior design student. I got this book when I received an assignment to analyze several case study buildings and draw diagrams ala this book. I probably would not have been able to do the assignment without it (eg, looking over a classmate's shoulder).

This book presents methods for analyzing and diagramming architectural schemas. It develops a notation language for this purpose. I found that I learned a lot by using it- how to study buidlings in new ways, and how to classify and compare buildings that I may never have thought about.

Now that I have it, I will use it as a reference, and I probably will always analyze buildings that I'm looking at or thinking about, with these methods. I think it's a useful book that should be in your library if you are studying architecture.

This book is certainly a great find for any students out there in design school whom need a good starting base. Historical Preservation is often overlooked as a proper precedent. Few teachers reason with those whom say old buildings have more character than the modern buildings. It is often hard to find a good example to back that statement up, but, fear not and look no further, this book is the solution. It breaks down many world famous structure designs for analysis in the design thinking. Well recommended for those with a historic background, just starting some sort of design education!

I like the information in this book. It's good for referencing and learning some key concepts in architecture. But, the best of information is of no use if you can't easily navigate it. The chapter indexing in this book is non-existent, there are several images with the caption merely in the image itself which does not allow for searching by keyword. The pages look as though they were scanned in rather than imported from a digital document file.

So so so much promise. Pictures are super small, averaging about an inch. Line weights and any sense of drawing language completely obliterated. It's not like the pages are filled either. There is a ton of white on the page that could be filled. Fire your graphic designer. I mean, at this scale it is virtually impossible to imagine the corporeal spatial relationships let alone geometry, hierarchy, circulation, parti, unit to whole etc. Maybe a figure ground diagram would work at this scale but not the rest no way. Even the arrows for the natural light diagrams aren't clear at first glance. Come on. Would be more successful if it showed larger drawings of less buildings if you still wanted the same amount of pages.

Having said that, it is good to see a book that does address issues of conceptualization so it will eek a couple of stars out of me because, well, I guess I still have a hope that it would live up to the promise of its title. They were barking up the right tree but were just blinded by bookmaking or something. Ironic to have a book about the benefit of analysis with such poor drawings. I also forget to criticize the absence of a scale

This is definitely an informative little book that is chalked full of great design inspiration and understanding of how certain architects developed conceptual notions as well as how to represent (in drawing fashion) an idea.

Glad this is in my library.

On time and in perfect condition. Ints very interesting the way diagrams show the geometric compositions of some of the most famous buildings.
