4.0 out of 5 stars Very good album, with flawed setup!, January 21, 2006

This review is from: Precious Memories (Audio CD)
Charlie McCoy has quite an impressive resume. How many musicians have worked with: Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Roy Orbison, Pam Tillis, Sammy Kershaw, and Jimmy Swaggart? He was the music director for Hee Haw. While he's mainly known for the harmonica, he can play quite a number of instruments. One story has him playing the bass and trumpet at the same time. This is his first Gospel album. It mainly covers beloved hymns. Overall, the results are very good. One thing really bugs me. For some crazy reason the twelve tracks on this CD are divided into two. Believe me, that can make getting to your favorite cut a little difficult. There are some noted guests featured. The Jordanaires continue their tradition of fantastic harmonies. Lulu Roman shows that she's not just a funny lady. Wanda Vick plays fiddle and dobro. Laney Hicks sings beautifully. The results are mixed. They do a great job. But I would have preferred more strictly instrumental songs. Some of us enjoy some nice background music. I give high marks for The Music City Tonight Singers. They are featured on my two favorite cuts. The lead vocalist is...Charlie McCoy. His vocal abilities often get overshadowed by his playing. He should sing more often. This is a nice album. I just hope that future releases divide each track individually.
