My least favorite of the series,
By
This review is from: Precious Things: Two Women, Two Pasts, One Future (Faded Photographs) (Paperback)
This is the 3rd book in the 'Faded Photograph' series. In this one, we continue on with Kylie's desire to get to know her biological mother. Kylie has to make the decision to marry Matt or not, to move to Sabal Beach with her newfound grandparents or not, to sell her home or not...and in the midst of all this, she's unsure that her biological mother wants to have anything to do with her. Kylie has been dealt some serious blows in the previous book-her mother passing away, finding out she wasn't really her mother and that Kylie was adopted, discovering she had family in another state that didn't know she existed as well as a biological mother, and as the frosting on the cake, her fiance' confesses to making out with her "best" friend. Very rough couple of months for her.
Meanwhile, Blythe wants to get to know Kylie, but doing so would mean putting her career at risk. Also, Kylie's "new" grandparents have animosity toward Blythe that is frustrating and just one more hurdle for them both to get over. (spoiler alert) I really enjoyed the first two books in the this series, but this one was somewhat of a letdown. While I'm happy that Blythe and Kylie form a relationship, Logan and Marilee tie the knot, and Jack and Allie tie the knot (all great wrap-ups to the books), the situation with Matt and Dena really bugs me. As we read in the 2nd book, he cheats on Kylie by making out with Dena, and when he confesses it he plays it off as more Dena's fault than his and even lies about the details of what happens. Granted, after it all finally comes out, he does stay very persistent but I just felt like he continued to downplay the whole situation and kept calling Kylie irrational. In the 2nd book, Kylie makes several observations of Logan's affection for Marilee and notes that Matt has never treated her that way. Sure, she keeps thinking of Matt anytime marriage comes up and she does still love him, but it truly blew me away when she gets back with him almost immediately and elopes with him. I realize Matt went through some counseling and re-committed his life to Christ, as did Kylie, and I wholeheartedly agree with forgiveness. I just wasn't convinced that he was good for her. All I'm saying is, if it were my daughter, and her fiance' didn't treat her with the love and respect that she desired BEFORE getting married, I would be strongly encouraging her to forget him. Forgive him, then forget him, LOL!

You can't run from your past forever...,

This review is from: Precious Things: Two Women, Two Pasts, One Future (Faded Photographs) (Paperback)
Boeshaar has outdone herself in Precious Things. She flawlessly mixes the past with the present in a story that deals with tough issues such as Forgiveness, a Hidden Past, Rekindling Friendships, and of course, Romance! The twist at the end really threw me. A terrific read that you won't be able to put down until you finish! You HAVE to get this one!

Don't Miss This One!,

This review is from: Precious Things: Two Women, Two Pasts, One Future (Faded Photographs) (Paperback)
Precious Things by Andrea Boeshaar is a "don't miss this one" type of story. If you have already read books one and two of this series, Precious Things (PT) is a MUST! If you haven't yet read Broken Things and Hidden things, click as fast as you can to those titles and order them! Of course, as with any series, it is best to read them in order. Back to PT. Ms. Boeshaar has intricately wound together all the angst playing out in the hearts of her characters and deftly shows how without God's intervention and love nothing can be resolved. The reader travels Blythe's journey from a life protected by her deftly hiding behind her antiques business to literally being stripped bare of her protective cover. As much as it seems her life is all but falling apart, it is God's way of lovingly putting back together all that was broken so many years ago. Not only in Blythe's life but in so many of the characters you've come to know and love throughout this series. Order this book. You won't be disappointed!

This review is from: Precious Things: Two Women, Two Pasts, One Future (Faded Photographs) (Paperback)
Precious Things is the 3rd book in the Faded Photographs series. It picks up right where Treasured Things left off. Boeshaar answers all your questions and ties all the characters together perfectly. As with her other two books, the various characters discover many things about themselves, and you watch them grow in their walk with the Lord. Even if you have missed the first two books, you can still follow the storyline completely.

Precious Things, the third book in the "Faded Photographs" series, continues the common thread brought forth in both Broken Things and Hidden Things, the two previous titles in Andrea Boeshaar's superior series.
Blythe Severson has immersed herself in the present, attempting to escape the mistakes of the past. And she believes she has succeeded...until one of those "mistakes" shows up at her front door. After giving up her baby due to her own perceived inability to care for it, Blythe faces going through her entire life with empty arms. Kylie Rollins has been buffeted by crisis after crisis: the death of her mother, a broken engagement, and the realization that the woman she had called Mom all these years, might not have been her real mother at all. Discovering that Blythe Severson is her biological mother, Kylie longs for a relationship with the woman. A relationship which she hopes will fill her empty heart. The two women come together, each possessing their own unique need. After all these years, will Kylie's heart be able to fill her mother's empty arms? And will Blythe's arms be enough to comfort her daughter's hurting heart? The two previous titles in Andrea Boeshaar's "Faded Photographs" series raised the bar for Christian fiction and Precious Things leaps the hurdle with ease. Another "must read." This review is from: Precious Things: Two Women, Two Pasts, One Future (Faded Photographs) (Paperback)
Blythe is brought face to face with the fall-out of decisions and vows made in her youth. When the young man she'd loved was killed, she was persuaded it was best to give up their baby for adoption. Okay, so now she's mature, faith has sustained her over many years of heartache, she has a successful antique business, but her heart still yearns for the daughter now seeking a relationship with her biological mother. The decisions Blythe has to make now will again have far reaching effects on several people. Is she prepared to lose her business, the man she is learning to love or continue to be estranged from the daughter she has always loved? The struggles of mother and daughter and the men who love them reached deep into my own heart. The way Andrea Boeshaar shows the truth and relevance of Scripture for today's problems warms and delights. Her excellent portrayal of real people in real struggles to find and obey God's ways must be a challenge to any reader searching for answers to life's questions of faith, love and forgiveness. This book is a keeper, one to read over and over!

I never read the first two books, I admit it, but these characters pulled me in. I stayed up 'til nearly 1:00 a.m. reading one evening. (yawn) But I wasn't disappointed. Through the characters, I saw examples of forgiveness in action--and how we must learn to forgive, which isn't always an instant occurrence. I cheered for Blythe and even cried a couple tears for her situation. Thanks for a great story! Now to get the first 2 books...

Filling the Emptiness,

This review is from: Precious Things: Two Women, Two Pasts, One Future (Faded Photographs) (Paperback)
Blythe is a former hippie who gave up her baby daughter, Kylie, after the sudden and tragic death of her boyfriend Rob. Kylie is adopted by Blythe's close friend Wendy, who is sworn to secrecy. Many years later, Kylie recieves a faded photograph and begins to piece together her past, which includes contacting Blythe for answers. Ms. Boeshaar weaves the past with the present wonderfully, giving us a glimpse into Blythe's colorful past as well as her outlook for the future. The tagline for this book is "A mother's empty arms and a daughter's empty heart," as the story proceeds it shows us how God's love made both full again. His love and forgiveness are never far away. This novel is very true-to-life, which I enjoy in Christian fiction. It shows that many Christians have less-than-perfect pasts and how their faith changes all of that. I wholeheartedly recommend this book for anyone who is a mother, or a daughter. |
