The metal pointer just falls out. I attempted to clamp it tighter with pliers, but it's clamped as far as it will go. I will have to try super glue next. Unfortunately, there aren't that many options on Amazon for a simple compass.

UPDATE 02.14.14: The super glue did the trick by the way.

I bought this compass at a local hardware store in Calais Maine. It looks like a good compass in the package, all metal construction as another reviewer said. But in reality, the construction is flimsy and sloppy. The compass does not lock into position nor is the pinch spring strong enough to allow scribing against rough surfaces where extra pressure may be needed. It's shape is not really conducive to accurate scribing either. Yes, it draws circles, but most carpenters/woodworkers are looking for more than that. Good buy for your kid in high school geometry, but I wouldn't go beyond that. I'm moving up to compass made from 3/8 solid steel bar stock. Buy once, cry once.

Excellent all-metal pencil compass. Far better than the plasticy asian stuff we see today, even though at first thought buying a compass online seemed fairly absurd. Precise, will last for a very long time. An essential for draftsmen and engineering students, well worth it.

The cheap construction of this compass makes it useless for woodworking. It won't hold it's position, I have to constantly check it's radius on a ruler. The adjustment wheel won't turn unless you pinch the arms together. This piece of junk has convinced me that General Tools, like so many other great brands, has gone down the path of cheapness in search of profits. I won't be buying any more General Tools products.

I've gone through dozens of cheap elementary school type compasses over the years and decided to get one that might be consistent from one moment to the next, or from one circle to the next. This one does the job and reaffirms the adage, you gets what you pays for.

This is a great version of compass for a lot of different reasons. One reason I enjoyed receiving this product is that it is difficult to find in stores. I'm still learning how to best use this kind of compass but, I invite the challenge of finding new ways of using versatile compass. Also, it was a very speedy delivery in deed.
So, Thank you. I would recommend others to purchase from this supplier.

Only used a couple of times for a project, and I had zero trouble. Was easy to use, intuitive w/o reading directions, and it made perfect circles as I needed. Now, I was making a cornhole game so wasn't after perfection. There are no measurements on it, but I did that part manually. I'm sure if you're a craftsman then this isn't for you, but if you're like me and just an average user, this will work great.

This is a great compass that is easy to adjust and holds it's setting well. I put up with a cheapy that frustrated me for years doing woodworking till I finally bought this. But I just found that you can get one at lowes for less than $5. So buying one online is pretty much senseless. Still, I gave it 5 stars for the products value even at $8, but just go and buy it from the hardware store.
