Nice looking "Log Cabin" has soft wood, prone to split,
By Casey Crede (Colorado) - See all my reviews

This is a very nice looking cabin, which would be attractive in any yard, front or back, and not be an "eyesore" to the neighbors. Its rood is waterproof on the exterior. The doors work well, and the possible modular configurations with the optional exercise yard pens are convenient.
I am keeping chickens in this structure, not rabbits. If I had rabbits in it, I would still want a little ventilation window in the sleeping space for cross-flow, and I would be worried about the rabbit chewing the very soft wood of the doorway and exercise yard panels. I recommend sand all over the floor and cedar chips in the sleeping place. For a rabbit or guinea pig who urinates repeatedly in one corner, I would screw in a plastic tray or consider stick-on linoleum tile inside, as it has a thin wood, possibly plywood, floor. Don't let this floor get wet repeatedly! Always predrill if making new holes. This wood will split. As it is, I have only a ventilation issue in the cabin, not a chewing or urine issue. I don't like the construction of the shingled roof using a thin plywood panel underneath The slightest continuous moisture, from a wet pet sitting inside, or from a day of rain or fog, causes this to delaminate & warp. Mine did this in a month. I reinforced mine with clear coat & a thin sheet of aluminum against further damage. I don't like this wood very much over eight-months' experience with housing pets in it. The wood does not withstand the elements as it's supposed to. I own two dog houses, a rabbit hutch, and two small chicken coops all built from this "kiln-dried Asian fir", which is Cunninghamia lanceolata wood. They are light and somewhat weather resistant, but over a few months' time, three of my roofs has had some wood which has started to warp and split. It has been rained on & then exposed to sun often in that period. When I bought this last structure --I was given the others-- I took care to use an oil stain and outdoor urethane clear coat on all exterior wood and on a couple of the plywood roof underlayments as well. I did this to all structures, and there has been no further splitting or warping. Be aware when purchasing, you will have to do something to maintain the wood over a time in the weather. I recommend oil-staining & Spar clear-coating over the water-based stain before housing a pet. The water-based stain washes away over time. It is also not very sturdy wood --sort of like a hybrid of balsa wood & cedar. Not nearly as strong as pine. A fingernail can leave a deep gouge in it. This hutch would work very well on a patio under a deck-overhang, where it won't get directly exposed to elements much. It looks like a Lincoln Log cabin, very cute for kids to use.

It was slightly damaged when I took it out of the box. My rabbit chewed the wood inside and he was bleeding from his nail. Im assuming he got stuck with a splinter. Also I would have liked to know how easy it is to clean

I am not tallented at putting things together but was able to with ease. all the screws were labeled and attached to a piece of cardboard. it comes with a ladder for two or more on top of eachother. unfortunaltely, the unit came somewhat damaged with a small part split in half. I was able to screw it together with the extra screws. The error looks like it happened in manufacturing rather than shipping. The fumes from this product were a little overwhelming when I first openned this product. The rabbit has already chewed the stairs and edge of the floor. i hope it is not toxic. I assume not if it is made for rabbits.
