4.0 out of 5 stars Good reading
I thought this book was pretty good reading. It does not really get into good shooting practice much, but more on history of long range competitions it seems. All in all, I thought it was a good book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very good insite, January 20, 2008

This book provided me with the basic information about long distance shooting. There are various authors that describe their experiences with this type of shooting. A good book for the beginner to determine whether this is a field that they would like to continue to explore.

The editor has brought together a good selection of articles from first class shooters. I haven't put it down since I bought it. The info on scopes taught me a lot more than I know. Not perhaps for the unambitious beginner. This will be a standard reference work in your library. Buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Stories - Not a lot of data, May 22, 2010

If you like this book, I got a new, wrapped copy at Cabelas for [...] or so, their regular price as far as I can tell.

This was quite a bit more story and some interesting insight, rather than a book on how to conduct precision shooting at 1000 yards. This is probably unintentional as the book is connected to the magazine "Precision Shooting" and is about shooting at 1000 yards.

I was disappointed at first, but I actually enjoyed what was in the book. I was glad I hadn't spent [...] and THEN been disappointed.

If you're looking for sheer tech info, keep moving...

~Mike

This book covers a lot of historical stories, very interesting and a nice way to warm you up for the problems that arise when shooting over long distances. The complex chain of chamber, bolt, barrel, cartridge, bullet (weight, shape), powder, external factors as wind, humidity, mirage, rain, sights (telecope, leaf&blade) the book is very clear in what to overcome. Written from a civilian perspective, a sportsman approach, this is about hitting material targets, numbers, shooting for points in competitions. No hints to sniping or hard-target interdiction.
All kind of hand made or hand-enhanced guns come into view and the way to handle them. The ammo, .50 or the Lapua or handloader-ammo, it is discussed. If you are searching for a hands-on course, a Field Manual on "how to" you'll be disappointed. If you like gun-related stories that boggle the imagination, shooting targets that you can hardly see with you naked eye, then this is for you. If you seek an overview of what's out there concerning tools of this trade, you'll find enough to inform and amuse you. The writing invites to read on and on. The book gave me a few days of pleasant updating my knowledge.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's a good reminder and referance., November 14, 2008

I wish I could give this book a better review, but I can't seem to hang on to it long enough to read the whole thing! Some one always has to borrow it from the last person it went to. What I have been able to read is on the money and good information.
I guess to be fair to the author, I'm going to have to buy another one and hide it when company comes over.
