My experience with Abbott glucose meter,

My experience with this meter.
My annual blood test showed that I was pre-diabetic with fasting glucose 109 and A1C also slightly above the desired range. I bought this meter to check myself further. This meter showed that I was diabetic, with a fasting glucose above 130. I went to a doctor after eating and Dr measured me in the office on their meter at 122. My Abbott meter showed 154. They suggested I get the control solution and check the accuracy of my meter. I did, and according to the check the meter was accurate. Abbott meter was showing me diabetic and the annual blood test and DR meter was showing me just slightly above desired reading. I bought another brand of meter. It also showed similar to the lab test and Dr meter. It consistently showed me about 20 points lower than the Abbott meter. I called the Abbott help line and told them that their meter was consistently showing me 20 points higher than my annual blood test, my new meter, and my Doctors meter. The guy argued with me for about 20 minutes trying to tell me that this Abbott meter was correct. Among the things he said was things like: Your glucose varies constantly, It may read 106 and then one minute later may read 140. I could not get through to him that this meter consistently measured me about 20% higher than three other sources. He just was insistent that the Abbott meter was correct. Actually if you believed what he was saying, then you would have to believe that glucose measurements were actually totally useless, since they varied at random from second to second by large numbers. He did not make any sense whatever. It meant nothing to him that his meter was consistently 20% above these other sources doing numerous trials. He just insisted his meter was accurate. Finally I told him I was not going to keep using this meter and buying the Abbott test strips with it reading this bad. Finally, without admitting that his meter was off, he said he would do a one time replacement of the meter, free of charge. The new meter arrived from Abbott and it also checked the same as the original Abbott that I had. I checked this one also with the control solution and it too said that it was accurate. Now I had 2 Abbott meters showing me quite a bit high on glucose compared to my other meter and to my lab blood tests. To resolve it, my doctor had blood drawn for a lab blood test, and using this same blood we checked the 2 Abbott meters and my other brand meter. The next day the lab results we returned. The lab showed my glucose at 104. Abbott number 1 showed it at 125. Abbott number 2 showed it at 123. My other meter was almost identical to the lab test just a couple points or so lower. The Abbott meters showed an average of 20% higher than the lab and my other brand of meter. It is probably a good idea to check any meter you get against a lab test, if you suspect it is not accurate.

Can be wildly inaccurate,

After a month of using this product for gestational diabetes, I am not impressed. Yes, it's easy to use, only a tiny drop of blood is required and the results appear quickly. However, I've had a lot of problems with the accuracy of the results. Often if I take a reading and it seems too high or too low, I repeat and get a number that shows a 20% or greater variance from the initial reading. I would *never* use this meter if I were on insulin.
The strips are fairly expensive, and seem to have a failure rate of 5-10%, in that 5-10% of them register either no reading at all or one that is questionable enough to demand a second reading (which never looks anything like the first). If you need to keep track of a general blood sugar range for a short period of time, this meter might suffice, but if you're needing one to determine the course of treatment for insulin-dependent diabetes, by all means, find something else.

This item was purchased as a second meter for my backpack. I have one I use daily and have found it to be easy and accurate to use. I purchase a second meter to put in my backpack so I would not forget it and be without a meter when on a Backpacking trip. The meter does everything I need and is very easy to use as well as being compact and rugged. I have found strips for this meter can be purchase in bulk packs of 100 on the net for half the price of over the counter prices plus free shipping. Tinny---www.minibulldesign.com

The best glucose / ketone meter !,
By
This review is from: Precision Xtra Blood Glucose Meter (Health and Beauty)
I got this item when my son was diagnosed with T1 diabetes at 18 months old. This meter will check blood sugar or blood ketones (2 different kinds of strips). We use this meter solely to check for blood ketones. It has saved us many times by helping us catch ketones on the rise so we can prevent DKA. We were able to correct him and help him feel better right away. This by far out weighs any benefits of urine test strips for ketones as it gives immediate ketones result. We couldnt survive without it. Its a vital part of our diabetes supplies.

Medisense Precision Xtra Glucose Meter,
This review is from: Precision Xtra Blood Glucose Meter (Health and Beauty)
Any personal glucose meter will not accurately reflect a person's blood sugar at any given moment in time. No matter the meter, your result, at best, will be a ballpark figure. You must interpret the results and dose accordingly. I have used the Medisense Precision brand for years and my endocrinologist has always said that my A1Cs accurately reflect my readings. I am a Type 1, diagnosed at age 8, 54 years ago.

THis makes checking ketone levels so much easier. Just a small blood sample and we have a farely accurate reading for ketone levels.
If only the test strips were not so expensive, it is a wonderful and useful tool for the parents of type 1 diabetics or probaly all diabetics.

I purchased this glucose meter as a "back-up" meter. I usually take it on
trips and travel. It is easy to read, appears to be as accurate as my FreeStyle Freedom Lite Glucose meter. The test strips seem to require a bit more blood and are readily available from many places. I like the carrying case that is included as it is relatively small and compact. Appears to be an excellent value for the money.

I have used this product for a number of years. I like the reliability and ease of use. Only needs a small dot of blood, can be tested on the finger or forearm and only takes 5 seconds to record a reading. I recommend this item to any person with diabetes who needs to check their blood sugar.

I used this for a few months and the LCD display went bad. I thought maybe the battery was weak, but it still failed after changing the battery.
