5.0 out of 5 stars action-packed, gory.
This book is awsome! With more action than you can shake an AK-47 at it made you always say "Just one more page." Detailed, exiting and entertaining!

"Hey Archer, we need more Predator books over here!"

2.0 out of 5 stars a disappointment after the first book
Predator: Cold War caught my eye because it was a Predator book and I am a Predator fan. I was also pleased to see it was written by Nathan Archer, whose work on the previous Predator novel I had enjoyed. The biggest thing that hooked me, though, was the plot: Predators in Siberia! Cool, I thought! They usually hunt in the heat, so they're out of their element...

They usually hunt in the heat, so they're out of their element. Maybe that will give the humans an upper hand! Thoughts of all the wonderful potential this novel had danced through my head.

Unfortunately, it wasn't quite as good as all that. The aliens' ship crash lands in Siberia, and the book mainly focuses on the Russians and Americans having a race to get to it first so they can study it. The Predators are not in the book nearly enough, and there's also not enough killing (I know how that sounds, but this is, after all, a Predator book, and it's what readers both expect and want).

The plot moves along at a decent enough pace, but never really seems to kick in to full-speed. However, the russian female lead character (my utmost apologies, but her name escapes me and I haven't a copy of the book nearby) is a great character. Schaefer shows up too (the guy from the first book), which is really cool, and has some nice scenes of conflict with the russian gal, what with their clashing personalities. These are some good points to the book, but they aren't quite enough.

The ending, when it does come, comes far too quickly. I think this book could have been saved by having been made longer and, oh, I don't know, showing the Predators some more (since it is a PREDATOR book). If you're a fan of Predator, you'll enjoy the book somewhat, but if not and you just want to sample a Pred. novel for some reason, go with the first book by Archer, Concrete Jungle.

I was very pleased with the second book of the Predator series. I look forward to more books(and hopefully another movie!). I would also appreciate any information on how I can publish my own Aliens vs. Predator book.

4.0 out of 5 stars PREDATOR'S COLD WAR BURNS WITH ADVENTURE!, October 4, 2004
This review is from: Predator: Cold War (Paperback)
tHIS IS ACTUALLY THE 1ST pREDATOR BOOK i'VE TRIED. iT WAS A FAST-PACED ACTION/ADVENTURE NOVEL that was fun to read.

The latest Alien vs Predator movie made me hunger for more, so I found this book and tried it. Glad I did. Nathan Archer is a good action/adventure sci-fi writer.

My only regret? That this story could have been fleshed-out more, both in storyline and character development.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first book, but Predator fans will enjoy!, June 21, 2001

This review is from: Predator: Cold War (Paperback)
Concrete Jungle was the first novel in the Predator series, and probably the best. Cold War tries to maintain that same feeling from the first book, but ultimately is not as successful. The setting of the frigid Siberian Winter definitely delivers, and Predator fans may find it odd that the hunt is going on in such a cold area of the world, but that is explained by what seems to be a malfunction in the Predator ship that caused it to crash. Now, the angry Predators have invaded a Russian Oil Pumping Station to find the materials needed for their ship, slaughtering ANYONE who gets in their way...

Call in Detective Schaefer. Having first-hand knowledge of how to deal with the creatures after the New York incident the previous summer (the events in Concrete Jungle), General Philips abducts Schaefer during a drug-bust gone bad and brings him to a remote military outpost, where he is briefed on the situation. When Philips promises to give information on his brother, Schaef reluctantly agrees to go along. Soon the team of Detective Schaefer and Lt. Ligacheva, who lost most of her men in the initial Predator attack, must try to find a way to prevent the U.S. and Russia from launching all out war on each other to determine who gets 'custody' of the Predator ship, while at the same time fighting for their lives.

This book is very descriptive, and sets great environmental moods. However, it fails to deliver the same feeling that the first book did. There are also lots of questions that the book raises that are never answered which detracts from the story over all. Other than that, it is a great read and Predator fans are sure to enjoy it. The continuing story of Detective Schaefer and his quest to find out what happened to his brother is interesting and I hope to see more books in the future. The Predator novels are all adapted from Dark Horse Comics mini-series, so we may actually see this continuing story in the future after all.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading, but not all that, October 19, 2000

The predator storyline is original in that it takes place in siberia, that was the part that interested me in reading it. The two main characters schaefer and the russian lieutenant are a couple of real predator but kickin heroes that do the human race proud and send a clear warning to other alien scum. As far as the action goes there is not to much up until the last quarter of the book, but it is worth reading for any predator fan.

3.0 out of 5 stars Halfway Decent, December 12, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Predator: Cold War (Paperback)
While it does do the Predator character justice, I have to say COLD WAR is my second-to-least favorite of the Aliens and Predator novels (1st is EARTH HIVE). As has been said before, the majority of the book is just people talking- Russians whispering off "ice demons", Americans spreading conspiracy theory, Schaefer (Arnie character's brother) being leveraged into going along with a mission to secure Predator technology. The dialogue is believable, but the pacing is off and the characters are horribly unlikable. I haven't read CONCRETE JUNGLE yet, but plan to and hope it's better than this.

I really liked this book!!! I think it was better than Concrete Jungle! IT didn't have as much profanity in it either. And i am not a fan of all the profanity(ruins a book)! but it is a must have action book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great conclusion, November 25, 2009
This review is from: Predator: Cold War (Paperback)
Following the events of the first book Concrete Jungle, it was a great continuation on a book I already really enjoyed. If you like the other one you'll like this one.
