“I found this book to be a mix of all the features I love in Carolyn's books. There's humor, a touch of romance, mystery, gore, thrill, excitement, happiness and sadness. It's even educational because I learned quite a lot about sharks. I definitely recommend this book, it's a keeper.”

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing to say the least January 15, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I orginally chose this series because I love this author's imagination and what she puts into her stories. However, I know going in that they will be riddled with grammatical errors as though a teenager wrote it last minute. I just can't seem to get enough of the adventure she provides in her stories and I keep hoping that someday she will employ a decent editor or do what other authors do and provide beta readings in which her fans can help her out for free. Then she could validate charging money or even more money.
Unfortunately, this story has been her worst yet and is no way a best seller. If she even bothered to do one read through and a small bit of editing, it would have made this series more enjoyable. Instead, I was overwhelmed by the typos, grammatical, errors, misspellings and outlandish, inaccuracies of the sharks. I'm no shark expert and yet much of what went on was unbelievable. What bothers me the most is that she claims at the end of all of her books to have put them through a "gazillion" edits and to contact her personally if you find any mistakes. However, it's obvious that no editing has been done and she doesn't seem to respond well to being contacted about her mistakes. I found myself so frustrated many times that I almost didn't finish. It's ridiculous to have to reread a sentence multiple times to try to figure out what the author is trying to say.
As for the series itself, I will try not to include spoilers, but I'm sorry if a few slip out. This series is based on the idea of a Shark Park built near the Great Barrier Reef. This idea alone is quite intriguing and the description of the underwater building is wonderful and made me feel as though I was actually there.

1.0 out of 5 stars What? April 11, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The storyline is pretty good, but the spelling and grammar are truly inexpressibly bad! I don't understand why, if a person is going to go to the trouble of dictating a story or book, they don't read and edit it. It's really painful to try to read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Salechii January 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
For an author who claims to be a "best seller," Carolyn McCray has an amateur, unprofessional, and informal voice as a writer. This series, with its atrocious grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors, could have been written by a fourteen-year-old. "Ya" is a nonexistent word, but it is persistently used throughout the novel series. This is an example of a self-publication failure that would have genuinely benefitted from an editorial period.

Even if the poor grammar is overlooked, "Salechii" and its accompanying series are still unimpressive. There is little to no character development, and the characters themselves are under-researched and therefore unbelievable. For example, a young woman in the novel has a severe phobia of sharks after she witnessed an attack on a close friend. However, a close call with a Great White relinquishes her phobia altogether; this is unrealistic and unbelievable. Another character is indifferent when his mistress is eaten alive before his eyes; realistically, even someone who cares little about another person would be shaken by such an occurrence. Even the characters that are intended to be "likable" are difficult to like.

There have been countless movies and novels about man-eating sharks: Jaws, Deep Blue Sea, Meg... However, "Salechii" is unique in that it does not bother to explain its monsters. Thanks to awareness programs, most people are now aware that shark attacks are rare and that sharks do not intentionally hunt humans - usually. Occasional man-eaters like "Jaws" are not unheard of, which makes the most famous of all shark stories believable. In Deep Blue Sea, the captive sharks were genetically enhanced, which bestowed them with human-like intelligence and awareness.

5.0 out of 5 stars An underwater shark park that goes wrong March 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I just finished the 3 stories in this collection, and I can't wait to see what happens next. I have to admit that I feel very blessed to live on solid ground! The idea of an underwater shark park seems reasonable at first, but you just KNOW that things are going to go bad. And really bad, too! It is fun to read how the characters problem solve.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sharks and Quarks March 3, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I so enjoy meeting new writers specially when I'm 5 pages into a new book and don't want to stop reading. Carolyn McCray writes with gusto...you know, the dialogue is effortless. The story flows into each new experience as smooth as silk and then BAM the adventure takes a turn you didn't expect and you just keep hoping no one will be killed.

If you like adventure with a little imagination thrown in, you will love The Apex Predators Collection. I know I would never have thought to build a Shark Park and have sophisticated robots, quarks,.to work alongside the people and to do the maintenance that is too dangerous for humans to do.

Carolyn McCray has invented a vacation spot I would like to experience after all the glitches are worked out, of course. After all we are talking about walking through the territory of killer sharks with only a tube surrounding us. The park people assure us that nothing can go wrong.

More About the Author

Carolyn has had a long and extremely interesting road to become a bestseller.

When she head to veterinary school those many years ago she had no idea decades later she would be writing controversial historical thrillers, gut wrenching mysteries and roller coaster-style action/adventure tales!

Born in San Francisco and raised in the beautiful Napa Valley, Carolyn always had an overactive imagination. As a child you could usually find her dragging the neighborhood children out to the haunted barn to make her Nancy Drew-style audio tapes. Oh and did she mention, there was an entire life-sized recreation of the nativity scene in the rafters? Yeah, that wasn't just a little creepy.

Which of course was great practice for writing such blockbusters as Plain Jane: A Patterson-style thriller with a dash of Hannibal and 30 Pieces of Silver: An Extremely Controversial Historical Thriller.

Carolyn is honored to have a seven book contract with Amazon's mystery and thriller imprint, Thomas & Mercer along with being one of the eight books during the inaugural launch of Amazon's new Serial program (9th Circle).

With over 250,000 books sold, Carolyn now lives on a beautiful lake in the Pacific Northwest where the fog rolls in over the water, snuffing out all signs of life around her. Yep, she still loves the creepy!
