Great Throwback for the Series,

For anyone that seems to not think this is a great Predator novel, I think you're missing the point here. Yeah, it's not all about the predators hunting and deals with humans a lot, but this is a complete homage to the first movie.
We get an ex-marine sniper who knows how to hunt with the best of them, loaded with the latest and greatest technology, who is a survivalist at heart and can take on the best and baddest. He's basically Dutch at 60. We get to see a new spin on what made the first movie so great, a fight between man and Predator on a somewhat level playing field. Rather than an all out shoot em up, this takes some great setups and trap tactics to tell a very convincing story about how most of us would love to live through. Regardless, this story has great characters that you actually feel for by the end and some really neat ideas of how this type of battle would go down. If you remotely like any other novels in these series (Aliens as well), this is a must buy. Not to mention Perry and daughter have been writing these things for years.

Solid and Satisfying,
By
This review is from: Predator: Turnabout (Paperback)
Perry is one of the better authors of these things and usually when I read a book by him I know it's at least going to be readable.
My main complaint is that, I guess, these books aren't taken seriously. I mean, they are about murderous space monsters, so I'm not sure why I thought that they would be, but what I mean by that is there are numerous typos and grammatical errors in the book that somehow slipped through what should be a rigorous proof-reading procedure. I don't even know if there is any proof-reading. The errors are not bad; just simple mistakes, like at one point I think the author duplicates a word in a sentence and another time a word was missing altogether. The types of mistakes that happen to anyone who writes, but that should have been caught somewhere along the line. Not a big deal at all, just a minor nit-pick. The plot itself is simple, but solid and entertaining to read. I did not check the copyright date in this book, so maybe this is just a really bizarre coincidence, but I laughed while reading about the dead guy in the beginning of the book who is so obviously based on Timothy Treadwell, the "Grizzly Man" who was killed by bears while being a weird hippie in the Alaskan wilderness in 2003. Pretty funny. Anyway, I didn't care for the love story aspect of the book, but I did really love the overall plot. I thought the characters were pretty well rounded. Worth the read in my estimation.

Snipers, Poachers, and Predators ; oh my,
By
This review is from: Predator: Turnabout (Paperback)
Plain and simple: former Marine sniper, Sloane is now a park ranger in Alaska. A group of poachers are in his park taking a toll on the bears for blackmarket resale purposes. Mary shows up to visit the death site of her brother. Meanwhile the predators are having their Hunt on the bears but then focuses on the humans too. This is more a book about an old sniper taking out pent up aggressions on the poachers and the predators are bit players at best in this outing. I didn't mind the story but it could have been much better without Mary and with some more predator side action (describe a few Hunting scens for them please). This is a bit like the mini-series comics put out by Dark Horse Comics in the late 90s. Its alright but definitely need more predator action.

Yes it is not about Predators stalking and killing humans the whole time. But, it tells an amazing story of how the Predators can be taken down.

What the novel does lack is the poor prescence of the predators. The creatures are barely included in the story, and if you're a hardcore fan then this book most likely isn't going to give you what you want. Also the story of what really happened to Paul was never solved. Of course, turnabout has all the standard gore and brutality a predator story can muscle out but the action is not very fastpaced. Bottomline... if you ain't got time to bleed then I wouldn't waste that on a brokedick dog. quick read and few grammatical errors 2/5 stars.

This was an interesting read and if you enjoyed the Predator movies you will want to check this book out. The story is more along the lines of that in Predator (the first movie) and is set on Earth rather than in space. With multiple Hunters stalking the wilderness and a variety of human characters in the mix this is a good read. A good choice if your just looking for some light, enjoyable reading, one of the better Predator novels to come out in recent years.

Let's be honest John Shirley's Predator: Forever Midnight had some great ideas but no one appreciated his retconning of the series. Alien and Predator veteran Steve Perry returns for this entry and delivers a superior Predator yarn.
Set in remote Alaska a Park Ranger and a tourist must fend off a gang of evil poachers and 4 of the Yautja (Predator talk for Predators). There's lots of hunting and sniping in this cat and mouse tale. It moves very quick and wastes no time in cutting to the chase. It's all you can really ask for when reading pulp fiction. It won't win any awards, but it's an entertaining read and one of the better Predator novels. And am I the only one who pictures porn star Max Hardcore when imagining what Ranger Sloane looks like?

This is the best predator novel to date! It reminds me of the first predator movie, small cast, characters development and a big finish. I like to care for characters and I did with this one. The predators are there but you do not see them often, and it is a good thing. I usually take 3-4 days to read a book (since English is not my first language) but I read this one in a single night. A solid 4.5/5

Hunting the hunters...,
By
This review is from: Predator: Turnabout (Paperback)
Turnabout, is a story following the lives of Ranger Sloane, an ex-Marine, and Mary Collins, taking place in Alaska. Mary visits, hoping to shed some light on the death of her younger brother... but finds more than anyone could have ever thought possible - even real.
This book has taken a nice step back from those that were recently written... and it's a step back I am happy for. It's a bare-bones, no nonsense story, reminiscent of the original film. Steve Perry does a WONDERFUL job of details and imagery, as well as getting strong character development and dialogue in. The story itself, is written with good sense, and is presented very smart. The two main characters (Sloane and Mary), I actually felt compassion and care for what may happen as I read along - the antagonists, the poachers in the story, were dirty, vile, and every terrible stereotype of a poacher you could imagine. - That's not to say it was predictable, just well written to get the reader to genuinely hate them. I'm giving this book five stars, because it earned it in my mind. I definitely recommend it to any Predator fan!
