Book Description

Fear What Lurks In The Shadows

The desolate streets of downtown Pittsburgh in 2073 are a reminder of the missile attack that forever changed the lives of the surviving scientists and students hidden in the fallout shelter of Helmsby's Genetic Research Center. Believing themselves to be the only survivors, they station themselves inside the center until food supplies near depletion. Thinking the fallout has lessened, they emerge three years later to discover strange creatures patrolling the streets in search of human flesh and blood. The creatures possess the ability to shift their genomes and alter their appearances by realigning their genetic sequences. Daniel Hutchinson, their leader, teams with Lucas Ridale and together they set out to scavenge the area for food and supplies with the hope to find other survivors. But Daniel's most recent journey uncovers mysteries more frightening than the shifters. He discovers the tip of Pittsburgh has been fenced off from the rest of the area. Low-flying helicopters observe the streets, making him ponder the question: Were the shifters released as simply part of a military experiment with humans being their prey?

5.0 out of 5 stars Predators of Darkness: atmospheric and creepy!!! May 18, 2007
Format:Paperback
Predators of Darkness starts right out with a curious line: "Dropping a cat from the top ledge of a ten-story office building was not the best way to remain hidden, but it was necessary."

It's the year 2073, and strange things roam the night after a missile attack in Pittsburgh has changed things, well, forever. There are a group of students who have survived, and are forced to leave the confines of their fallout shelter and search for food and assorted whatnot.

They find bizarre creatures, who are in turn looking for victims---er, food---themselves. What follows is a nice story with a lot of twists and turns, and a mystery or two to unravel.

My first thought while reading this book was that it's kind of a cross between The Omen and Sleepwalkers. It's smart, tense, witty, creepy, even a bit erotic. It's a great read; I read the entire 300+ pages in one night.

Good dialogue, excellent mood and setting, some well developed characters, and some nightmarish creatures highlight this absorbing and unusual book. Definitely worth a look.

4.0 out of 5 stars Raw and Graphic, Great Read December 29, 2011
By KW
Format:Paperback
This book is really raw. It reminded me very much of the feel movie Sin City, almost like a comic strip. Very violent, filled with gore, sexual, sensual, action packed. I could certainly picture it turning into the next big special effects laden action flick!

There were quite a few misplaced words and grammatic errors throughout, which was slightly distracting. I often times found myself trying to skip descriptive paragraphs just to find out what was going to happen next. The biggest issue I had with the writing was the transitions of perspective. Two pages would be following Daniel and then the very next paragraph suddenly switches to Lucas without a break or a way to prepare you for the switch. By the time I figured out we had switched characters, I had to backtrack and re read the section.

Overall, I would say it was inventive and entertaining. At first I was thinking, "What am I getting myself into!?!?", but less then halfway through I couldn't put it down. If you are queasy with violent scenes, don't like too much profanity, or stray from sexually charged scenes- skip this one. But if you like plot twists, genetic beasts, Hollywood caliber action, cyborgs, and high energy adventure- give this book a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tag team reading for everyone. June 1, 2007
Format:Paperback
I received this book last Friday. Everytime I put it down (I'm a 48 year old mom), my son (15) picked it up and started reading it. It totally captures your imagination. How often do parents and kids share something that they both enjoy? By Saturday afternoon, we had both read it. We are both eagerly awaiting the sequel. Anyone who enjoys suspense and sci fi will love this book.
