5.0 out of 5 stars 'Super-Group' Makes Super Album, October 3, 2002
By
Azrael (Lake Forest, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Predominance (Audio CD)
This band, for all intensive purposes, is considered a 'super-group' (ala Borknagar, for example) because it contains awesome musicians from a variety of bands, most notably Old Man's Child and Dimmu Borgir. What makes this album so incredibly great is that it combines a black metal feel with a surpremely refreshing touch of thrash and speed metal to give this album real appeal. All the songs are very catchy (in a good way!) and a lot of them are also a bit groove driven (think Arch Enemy). However, the vocals are something more akin to Shagrath of Dimmu Borgir. The drumming on this album is fantastic (considering it's by Tjodalv of ex-Dimmu Borgir fame) and the guitar work and bass work are also extremely well done. I had the pleasure of seeing these guys live at Metalfest XVI in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and I can say that this band knows how to please a crowd.

A fair amount of riffing is similar to perhaps John Petrucci of Dream Theatre (though of course not quite as good). The album also doesn't sound the same the entire time. The variety provided allows for all kinds of influences, and I would highly recommend this to anyone who's a fan of speedy heavy metal goodness with black metal style vocals. The musicanship is great, the production is even better, and overall this is a fantastic album. Check it out and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling masterpiece, December 21, 2001

Pic McGee (DUBAI United Arab Emirates) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Predominance (Audio CD)
I hadn't actually realized it untill very recently, but the production of this band, considering it's a debut album, is EXCELLENT!

However good production is meaningless without good music. Britney Spears is well produced... These guys match and exceed expectations of a debut album. It's hard, it's heavy, it's melodious. It's like The Forsaken meets Cradle of Filth meets At The Gates meets Children of Bodom. A huge melting pot of metal genres. The only thing missing would be the unique operatic vocals of Tarja from Nightwish, (but hey nobody's perfect).
This is a non-stop music masterpiece. Trashy guitars, powerful drum beats, well mixed synths, and pretty good vocals. My only complaint about the vocals is that he doesn't growl enough. Sometimes he 1/2 growls, which shows a lack of effort. But other than that, it's amazing music.

If you want great thrashy metal check out I Am Pain
If you want more Dimmu Borgir style listen to Vain Glory
And If you want just an awsome song check out Blood On My Hands

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally, something refreshing !!!, June 25, 2001

Well..First of all i want to think Susperia for releasing such a great album for all of us tired of endless keyboard arrangements(Dimmu Borgir) and same melodic passages (Old Man's Child). This band mixes thrash-death and black metal influences along with power-doom metal riffs. Everyone will find something on this album. At first, i thought that this album sounds like havier Covenant's "Nexus Polaris" with more energy and agression,as a matter a fact, as a guitarist i can tell you that guitar work is much more interesting on this album, even though it's hard to outplay Astennu and the lead-guitarist did a great job. Production is outstanding as you could expect from Peter & boys (Abyss studios). This a best debut i've heard since Opeth's "Orchid". I haven't stopped listening to this album since i got it, which was about few months ago. I give it 4 stars simply because of the vocalist's clean voice (i bet he tries hard), but comparing to Simen,Vintersorg or Garm, he's annoying. I like his grim vocals though. This is an awesome album....If this album would cost 40$ , i wouldn't even think about it and buy it... Totally great album. Highly recomended to fans of Soilwork,Dimmu Borgir,Covenant,Borknagar and Opeth.
