3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite up to the sum of its parts
Susperia is the latest concoction whipped up by Tjodalv (Dimmu Borgir, Old Man's Child), and to its credit the band doesn't bear more than a passing resemblance to either of Tjodalv's previous gigs. That said, it would be a harder case to make that there is no other precedent for Susperia's mid tempo melodic death metal in today's musical climate. More Christian...

5.0 out of 5 stars 'Super-Group' Makes Super Album, October 3, 2002

This band, for all intensive purposes, is considered a 'super-group' (ala Borknagar, for example) because it contains awesome musicians from a variety of bands, most notably Old Man's Child and Dimmu Borgir. What makes this album so incredibly great is that it combines a black metal feel with a surpremely refreshing touch of thrash and speed metal to give this album real appeal. All the songs are very catchy (in a good way!) and a lot of them are also a bit groove driven (think Arch Enemy). However, the vocals are something more akin to Shagrath of Dimmu Borgir. The drumming on this album is fantastic (considering it's by Tjodalv of ex-Dimmu Borgir fame) and the guitar work and bass work are also extremely well done. I had the pleasure of seeing these guys live at Metalfest XVI in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and I can say that this band knows how to please a crowd.

A fair amount of riffing is similar to perhaps John Petrucci of Dream Theatre (though of course not quite as good). The album also doesn't sound the same the entire time. The variety provided allows for all kinds of influences, and I would highly recommend this to anyone who's a fan of speedy heavy metal goodness with black metal style vocals. The musicanship is great, the production is even better, and overall this is a fantastic album. Check it out and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling masterpiece, December 21, 2001

I hadn't actually realized it untill very recently, but the production of this band, considering it's a debut album, is EXCELLENT!

However good production is meaningless without good music. Britney Spears is well produced... These guys match and exceed expectations of a debut album. It's hard, it's heavy, it's melodious. It's like The Forsaken meets Cradle of Filth meets At The Gates meets Children of Bodom. A huge melting pot of metal genres. The only thing missing would be the unique operatic vocals of Tarja from Nightwish, (but hey nobody's perfect).
This is a non-stop music masterpiece. Trashy guitars, powerful drum beats, well mixed synths, and pretty good vocals. My only complaint about the vocals is that he doesn't growl enough. Sometimes he 1/2 growls, which shows a lack of effort. But other than that, it's amazing music.

If you want great thrashy metal check out I Am Pain
If you want more Dimmu Borgir style listen to Vain Glory
And If you want just an awsome song check out Blood On My Hands

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally, something refreshing !!!, June 25, 2001

Well..First of all i want to think Susperia for releasing such a great album for all of us tired of endless keyboard arrangements(Dimmu Borgir) and same melodic passages (Old Man's Child). This band mixes thrash-death and black metal influences along with power-doom metal riffs. Everyone will find something on this album. At first, i thought that this album sounds like havier Covenant's "Nexus Polaris" with more energy and agression,as a matter a fact, as a guitarist i can tell you that guitar work is much more interesting on this album, even though it's hard to outplay Astennu and the lead-guitarist did a great job. Production is outstanding as you could expect from Peter & boys (Abyss studios). This a best debut i've heard since Opeth's "Orchid". I haven't stopped listening to this album since i got it, which was about few months ago. I give it 4 stars simply because of the vocalist's clean voice (i bet he tries hard), but comparing to Simen,Vintersorg or Garm, he's annoying. I like his grim vocals though. This is an awesome album....If this album would cost 40$ , i wouldn't even think about it and buy it... Totally great album. Highly recomended to fans of Soilwork,Dimmu Borgir,Covenant,Borknagar and Opeth.

5.0 out of 5 stars black metal with rhythm!, May 30, 2001

Flawless production and song arrangement are what this album is all about. nearly all of the disc is straight-up black metal, with little much else than evil guitar and singing--exactly what i want in a black metal disc. Susperia includes Tjodalv on drums, a founding member of Dimmu Borgir, and Cyrus, a seasoned session guitarist for bands like Satryicon & Old Man's Child. One of the main reasons for singer Athera's interest in Susperia was that it focused emphasis on guitar, drums, bass, & singing--and not muddied by overproduction nor other instruments.

This disc is Norwegian black metal mastery; the only downfall being that the underlying concepts of the music are basically part of the formula. However, sometimes being one of the greatest masters of a given formula is just as respectable as creating something entirely new, but doing an average job at it. This disc is of my favorites of the year in my love of black metal, and if you want perfection in production & musicianmanship, and great lyrics as well, get this disc! They would be the perfect opening band for Slayer somewhere too!

This album is by far the rawest of Susperia's albums. True to form, this album is dark and foreboding. This album ROCKS!!!

More Christian baiting, misanthropic candor wins the day once again, casting a dark pall over what many hoped to be another boy band summer. In case anyone hadn't noticed over the past ten years, Norwegians don't tend to be a happy lot, and when you live in an area as perpetually frigid as Scandinavia it's not unusual to want to summon a little hellfire to heat things up now and then. And from the torrid, flippantly vile "I Am Pain" to the torrid, flippantly vile "The Coming of a Darker Time", consistency is the key here. Susperia aren't out to shatter the world: a mere hairline fracture in the stone edifice of public morality will do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best debut ever!, October 31, 2001
By
This review is from: Predominance (Audio CD)
As far as I'm concerned, this is the best debut ever :)

I don't like very much blackmetal, but Susperia mixes a lot of great musical elements and this alone makes it a good buy...

Go to their site (...) and join the diehard fans :)

3.0 out of 5 stars not bad, but..., May 21, 2001

I haven't heard the album, but I heard this band live yesterday. In my opinion, just ordinary Norwegian blackmetallers, nothing unique. Better buy the new Dimmu Borgir album, they really rocked my a$$ away...

2.0 out of 5 stars They do indeed sound like Arch Enemy but ..., November 14, 2002

This review is from: Predominance (Audio CD)
that is not a good thing. I really wanted to like Arch Enemy, I continue to listen to their stuff in hopes of finding something to draw me to them but alas their musicianship is just too polished for their own good. Their female vocalist who is suposed to be great i did not find so. Dani Filth is far superior (or at least he used to be a few years ago). I consider MayheM's old singer to be about the best black metal vocalist ever (listen to I AM THE LABYRINTH). Her vocals are just too processed-sounding. If she actually sang up high in more of a natural voice that would be much better.
The guitarists may have great skill but none of the songs strike me as particulary gripping (the way old Borknagar/In flames's material was.) All of their songs tend to flow together into a sort of mush. I still cant recall one particular song from the lot because none are distinct. Same here with Susperia. THey sound like a copy-cat band of many influences, all of which flow together into a mushy, generic blackish metal with no real originality or draw to the music. Just skilled musicians with no really good ideas or inspiration unlike a certain LUCA TURILLI. Kinda like much of Yngwie's stuff, although im still a big fan of his. Basically, if you want something "refreshing" i suggest you seek out STORMLORD, who's drummer OWNZ boring ol' ARch Enemy's drummer at kicks. Actually, if you think this is great stuff, im not sure you deserve to know about STorm Lord, true masters of fast melodic deth metal. O well.
